Researchers Randal Snyder and Alexander Karatayev received funding for two projects:

Randal Snyder -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency -- Evaluating Ponto-Caspian Fishes for Risk of GL Invasion -- $111,264
Many potential fish invaders from the Ponto-Caspian region have yet to be identified because of a lack of information available to western scientists.  We will supplement current lists of high-risk fish invaders from the Ponto-Caspian by identifying new high-risk species via a review of the extensive Russian literature on these species.  We will then evaluate the likelihood that ballast water regulations would prevent invasions by these species, and informational materials on these fishes will be developed to support early detection and monitoring initiatives in the Great Lakes.

Alexander Karatayev -- SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry -- GLOS Buoy Eastern Lake Erie -- $35,000
The buoy provided by GLOS (Great Lakes Observation System) to Buffalo State College, will be maintained and run through the Great Lakes Center.  This buoy is part of a regionally distributed network of 19 fixed monitoring buoys that are located throughout the five Great Lakes.  The buoy is one of six new standard GLOS buoys and the only one located in the Eastern basin of Lake Erie.
