SOFTBALL (4-6) - Bengals Start 4-6 in Ft. Myers, FL; Hollander Wins No. 300

Buffalo State opened its 2002 season with its annual spring trip to Ft. Myers, FL this past week with mixed results. After winning their first game, and securing head coach Sandra Hollander's 300th career victory, the Bengals played inconsistently to post a 4-6 mark for the week.

Buffalo State opened its season on Sunday against Middlebury, and jumped out of the gates with seven runs in the first three innings. With a 9-2 lead entering the seventh inning, the Bengals received a scare as the Panthers mounted a five-run rally including a grand slam, but Buffalo State clung to the 9-7 win. Tracy Urban (Lancaster/Lancaster) went 1-for-2 with a three-run homerun and Tiffany Ciolek (Great Valley/Salamanca) was 2-for-3 with a homerun. Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) was also 2-for-3 and Stephanie Menth (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) was 2-for-4. Urban earned the win on the mound despite allowing six earned runs, and Elizabeth Beiter (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) picked up the save recording the final two outs.

Buffalo State fell to Kalamazoo in the second game of the day by a 4-1 margin. Freshman Melissa Balsavage (Depew/Depew) pitched well in her collegiate debut, allowing just seven hits and one earned run, but the Bengals were unable to overcome their six errors. Heidi Rammacher (Angola/Lakeshore) went 2-for-3 at the plate.

On Monday, the Bengals fell behind Lawrence 4-0 in the top of the first inning. Buffalo State battled back and tied the game at 4-4 in the third, but fell by a final score of 6-5. Sirianni was the only Bengal with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 including a homerun. Beiter allowed six hits and two earned runs in the loss.

Upper Iowa blanked the Bengals 3-0 in the second game on Monday. Balsavage was the hard-luck loser for the second consecutive start, surrendering just seven hits and single earned run. Kim Nogle (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) led the offense going 2-for-3.

Buffalo State looked to get back on the winning track on Tuesday against Division II Hillsdale. Trailing 2-1 entering the seventh inning, Buffalo State finally received some timely hits, and rallied to win the game 3-2. Stephanie Menth (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) and Rammacher each went 3-for-4 with a double. Erin Olsen (Lancaster/Lancaster) was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, and Ciolek went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Beiter earned the win allowing just five hits and no earned runs.

The Bengals carried the momentum into the second game against Hamline, entering the bottom of the seventh inning tied at 1-1. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Urban threw a wild pitch, allowing the Pipers to plate the winning run 2-1. Urban pitched well, giving up just seven hits and one earned run. Ciolek went 3-for-3 at the plate and Sirianni was 2-for-4 with a solo-homerun.

After a day off on Wednesday, Buffalo State went back to work on Thursday against Endicott. The Gulls held the Bengals offense in check, allowing just four Buffalo State hits on route to the 3-0 win. Balsavage surrendered nine hits and just two earned runs, receiving no run support for the third consecutive start. Nicole Willats Tonawanda/Sweet Home) accounted for two of the Bengals hits, going 2-for-3.

In the day's second game, Buffalo State spotted Concordia a three-run lead before rallying to eventually tie the game at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cobbers scored four times in the eighth inning however, to claim the 8-5 win. Menth was 3-for-4 and Alyssa Brosius (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) was 2-for-3, leading the Bengals at the plate. Rammacher and Ciolek both went h a 10-0 win in five innings over Union. Urban threw a three-hitter for her second win of the year, and was 2-for-3 with two RBI helping her cause at the plate. Rammacher was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Olsen was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run score. Sirianni was also 2-for-4.

In the final game of the trip, Hartwick jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Bengals responded with 14 runs of their own, winning 14-6 in just five innings. Beiter picked up the win allowing no hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Rammacher, Ciolek and Sirianni all recorded three hits including triples. LACROSSE (0-3) - Bengals Winless Through Three Non-Conference Games

Buffalo State experienced some growing pains under first year coach Staci Handley this past week, as it opened its 2002 season with three losses.

The Bengals opened the season four days after the start of spring, but it felt as if it was the middle of winter. Playing in freezing temperatures and a harsh wind, Buffalo State's faced off against a well-prepared St. John Fisher team at Coyer Field. The Bengals fell behind by two goals

early in the game and could never recover. St. John Fisher dictated the tempo of play with a patient offensive attack, and cruised to the 15-1 win. Freshman Stefanie Hineman (Lancaster/Lancaster) tallied the Bengals' lone goal and Kathleen Plis (Auburn/Auburn) recorded an assist. Leah Delormier (Rooseveltown/Salmon River) made five saves in goal in the losing effort.

Due to inclement weather in Meadville, PA on Thursday, Buffalo State's second game of the season was moved from Allegheny College to Buffalo State's Coyer Field. Determined to get the first win of the season, Buffalo State came out firing. With goals from Hineman and Katie

Richelt (Snyder/Amherst), the Bengals surged to an early 2-0 lead. From there, the game turned into a back-and-forth shoot-out, with Danielle DeJames (West Seneca/Frontier), Plis and Hineman adding goals before the half. Buffalo State went into half-time down by a score of 6-5. Allegheny established a three-goal lead early in the second half before the Bengals mounted their comeback. Senior captain, Plis scored two second-half goals and Andrea Floriano (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) added another, but the Bengal effort was not enough as time expired with Allegheny escaping with a 9-8 victory.

After two hard-fought losses, the Bengals traveled to Rochester to face R.I.T. for a Saturday afternoon match. The Tigers' offense was too much for the Bengals as Delormier faced a barrage of 41 shots and R.I.T. never let Buffalo State into the contest. Hineman scored the lone goal

for the Bengals as Buffalo State lost the contest 19-1.

Who's Next?

Buffalo State returns to action at home on Tuesday as the team begins SUNYAC play against Geneseo. The Bengals will then go on the road for two SUNYAC contests against Cortland on Friday, and Oswego Saturday.

Nice Start...

Freshman Stefanie

Records Breaker?

Senior captain, Kathleen Plis (Auburn/Auburn), needs just nine goals to surpass the school record for goals scored in a career (Chelus, 69, 1994-97) and 13 points to become Buffalo State's all-time leading scorer (Chelus, 78, 1994-97). Plis currently holds the record for most goals in a

season (31).

TRACK & FIELD - Bengals Ready for Outdoor Season

Buffalo State's track and field teams will open the 2002 outdoor schedule this Saturday at Ithaca. The men's team will look to continue to build on the momentum of the indoor season that saw the Bengals earn their highest major meet finish in school history when they placed third at the

SUNYAC Championships. The women's team will look to continue to develop under first-year head coach Eugene Lewis.
