FOOTBALL (1-9) - Bengals Finish 2002 Season at Home
Buffalo State closed out its 2002 season at home on Saturday, losing to Washington and Jefferson, 7-3.
After forcing Buffalo State to punt on its opening drive, W & J drove 46 yards on nine plays, capped off by a Brian Dawson nine-yard quarterback keeper for the score to take an early 7-0 lead. Both team defenses dominated for the remainder of the contest. Eric Buchanan (Hamburg/Frontier) finally got the Bengals on the scoreboard with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter when he hit a career-long 36-yard field goal to cut into the deficit, 7-3. The Bengals took over on their own 12 with 44 seconds remaining in the contest for a final chance to pull ahead. After Buffalo State drove the ball to midfield, W&J's Frank Pilato intercepted a Buffalo State desperation pass with 11 seconds remaining to end Buffalo State's season and keep the Presidents' postseason hopes alive.
Both teams combined for just 331 total offensive yards as Buffalo State totaled 181 and W&J gained 150. Curtis Hathcock (Buffalo/Bennett) was the Bengals' leading ball carrier with 86 yards on 17 carries. John Lesure (Rochester/Greece Athena) and Star Handley (Willamsville/Tonawanda) led the Bengals with 11 tackles each. Nathan Van Husen (Bradford/Bath-Halverling) recorded two of Buffalo State's seven sacks, and Tyree Parker (Buffalo/Burgard) recorded a pair of interceptions.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY (3-7-1, 2-3-1) Buffalo State Earns One Point Over Weekend
Buffalo State hosted Utica College this weekend for an ECAC West hockey doubleheader, losing to the Pioneers on Saturday, 2-0, and tying Utica on Sunday, 3-3.
On Saturday, Buffalo State was out-shot 42-22, and defeated 2-0, by the Utica College Pioneers. Mary Keddie (Willamsville/Bufalo Bisons) made 40 saves for the Bengals.
Sunday, the Bengals fell behind 2-0 on two early Utica goals. At the 17:20 mark, junior Janelle Schmitt (Arlington, WA/Northwest Admirals) put the Bengals on the board scoring her fourth goal of the year. At 5:14 of the second period, Schmitt scored again, and tied the game at two. Emma Wadsworth (Arlington, VA/Reston Raiders) and Carolyn Totaro (Rome/North Country CC) assisted on the goal. Scoring only 1:06 later, Utica took the lead once again to end the second period. At 15:14 of the third, Schmitt completed the hat trick and tied the game at three. Buffalo State peppered the Utica goaltender in overtime, recording seven shots, but the game remained knotted at three. After the weekend, Buffalo States record is now 3-7-1 overall and 2-3-1 in ECAC West play.

Buffalo State will host RIT on Thursday night at 7pm, and then host Neumann College for two games. On Saturday, at 4 pm, and Sunday at 1 pm.
CROSS COUNTRY - Teams End Season at NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships
Buffalo State competed at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships on Saturday, at the College of New Jersey. The men finished in 17th place of 33 teams with 448 points, while the women placed 17th out of 15 teams with 228 points.
AJ Walsh (Hamburg/Frontier) was the top Bengal finisher on men's side at 47th, with a time of 27:27. Michael Herron (West Seneca/West Seneca East) crossed the finish line in 75th place with a time of 28:10. Matt Kubiak (Lakeview/Frontier) and Jon Jackson (Utica/TR Proctor) finished in 28:29 and 29:02 respectivley, placing 111th and 131st overall.
Nichole Van Hoesen(Stamford/Stamford Central) was the top finisher for the women, completing the course in 26:02, good for 74th place. Freshman Tammy Putt (Allegany/Allegany) finished in 78th place, with a time of 26:08. Tiffany Knarr (East Aurora/ Iroquois) and Alexsandra Halin (Clarence/Clarence) finished in 80th and 104th places respectively, with times of 26:09, and 26:45. This race marked the end of the 2002 cross country season.
MEN'S HOCKEY (2-5-1, 1-3) - Buffalo State Wins Big at Brockport
Buffalo State played two SUNYAC road games this weekend. Friday the Bengals defeated Brockport 7-2. Saturday, Buffalo State was defeated by Geneseo, 5-3.
Friday night Buffalo State traveled to Brockport and rolled the Golden Eagles, 7-2. Joe Urbanik (Calumet City, IL/Waterloo) led the Bengals with four goals, and one assist. Junior Mark Yoder (Fort Wayne, IN/Grand Rapids) tallied four assists in the victory. Greg Prybylski (Cheektowaga/Capital Centre Pride) scored twice for Buffalo State.
Saturday, Buffalo State faced off with Geneseo, and were defeated by the Ice Knights, 5-3. Dave Caderette (Boyne City, MI/Toledo Jr. Storm) and Ricardo Hernandez (Eagle River, AK/Ventura Mariners) each had one goal and one assist for the Bengals. Currently Buffalo state is 2-5-1 overall, and 1-3 in SUNYAC play.

Buffalo State will be on the road again this weekend for a pair of non-conference games in Manhattenville on Friday, and Saturday.
SWIMMING & DIVING - Women Win at Penn St. Behrend
Saturday, Buffalo State traveled to Penn St. Behrend. The women's team was victorious, while the men were defeated.
Sophomore Marie Ryer (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) highlighted the women's side winning three events. Ryer anchored two of the women's relay teams to victory, first in the 400-yard medley with a time of 4:45.11, then in the 400 free with a time of 4:10.04. Ryer also shattered her personal best time while capturing first place in the 50 free, in 26.87. Divers Sara Krawczyk (Cheektowaga/W. Seneca East) and Susanna Lehmann (Alexander/Alexander) placed first and second respectively in the one-meter diving event with scores of 165.60, and 137.65, and also in the three-meter event with scores of 180.10 and 163.10.
On the men's side, diver Michael Klein (Hamburg/Hamburg) finished first in the three-meter diving event, setting a Penn St. Behrend pool record with 236.40. Senior Matt Helming (Amherst/Sweet Home) placed first in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:56.64. Helming also placed first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a team time of 3:38.85.

Buffalo State will travel to Potsdam for the North Country Invitational on Friday and Saturday, with start times of 4pm, and 9am respectively.
