TRACK & FIELD - Outdoor Season Opens at Duke University
Buffalo State's outdoor track and field teams got a glimpse of the "big time" as they opened their 2003 outdoor season at Duke University in a meet co-hosted by North Carolina Central University. Bengals freshmen Celestine Coney (Lyons/Lyons) and Justin Muise (Kenmore/Kenmore West) needed no time to adjust to the outdoor track, as they both dented the Bengals' record books in their first attempts.
Coney led the women's team as she broke a pair of individual school records and helped set another. She eclipsed the school record in the 100m hurdles, clocking 15.27 and placing 18th. The old record was 15.69 by Merna Morris in 1995. She also bested the school standard in the 400m hurdles, running the course in 1:04.18 and capturing 13th. The previous record was 1:05.03 by Tascha Moore in 2000. In addition, she joined Linda Williams (Rochester/Edison Tech), Autumn Hensel (Akron/Akron) and Desiree Gibson (Rochester/Edison Tech) in the 4x100m relay to run a 50.32, beating a previous Buffalo State record of 50.90 set back in 1986. Williams added a 24th place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 12.73. Gibson placed 23rd in the 200m dash, running 26.35.
On the men's side, Muise made an instant impact, setting a school record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.69, while placing sixth. The previous record was 54.50 by Mike Burroughs in 1981. Tammon Benjamin (Mt. Vernon/Mt. Vernon) also had a successful debut, placing 23rd in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.67.
The Bengals faced their best competition of the season, running along side the likes of Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Syracuse and several other Division I schools.
