LACROSSE - (2-4, 1-2) Bengals Win Weekend Pair

Buffalo State captured its first two wins of the season this weekend in Potsdam and Cazenovia.

On Friday at Potsdam, Buffalo State trailed 5-4 after the first half before rallying to outscore the Bears 7-3 in the second for an 11-8 win. Stefanie Hineman (Lancaster/Lancaster) scored four goals to lead the Bengals, Annie Tallchief (Perrysburg/Lakeshore) tallied three goals, and Catherine Torruella (Geneva/Geneva) had a pair in the win.

On Saturday the Bengals visited Cazenovia, and dominated the Wildcats 16-3. Chelsey Frail (Hilton/East Rochester) led the Bengals onslaught, netting five goals. Hineman and Nadya Chomiak (Elma/Iroquois) added three goals apiece, and Jillian Rindos (Lancaster/Lancaster) and Tallchief each scored twice in the win.

Buffalo State is now 2-4 overall and 1-2 in SUNYAC play.

Buffalo State will travel to Brockport on Monday for a make-up game, and then host Fredonia on Tuesday, New Paltz on Friday, and Oneonta on Saturday.

SOFTBALL (12-6/3-1) - Bengals Open SUNYAC Play 3-1

The weather finally broke and allowed Buffalo State to return to action this past week, as the Bengals posted a 4-2 record in six games.

Buffalo State hosted RIT on Thursday, and appeared rusty on offense in the first game, as it fell 1-0 and only mustered a single hit. Melissa Balsavage (Depew/Depew) was credited with the hard-luck loss, allowing just four hits in the complete game. The Bengals rebounded in the nightcap, however, trouncing the Tigers 8-0 in five innings on the strength of a five-run fifth. Elizabeth Beiter (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) hurled a one-hitter for the shutout win. Heidi Rammacher (Angola/Lakeshore) led the offense going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South) was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

The Bengals opened SUNYAC play on Saturday at New Paltz with a pair of convincing victories, winning 9-1 in six innings in the opener and 10-0 in five innings in the nightcap. Balsavage earned the win in the opener, striking out six, and allowing just two hits. Stephanie Menth (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) and Rammacher were both 2-for-4, and Nicole Willats (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) was 1-for-3 with three RBI. In the second half of the twin bill, Beiter and Jen Ryan (Jordan/Jordan-Elbridge) combined for the shutout on the mound. Rammacher homered for the Bengals and recorded two RBI, and Willats was 2-for-3. Janelle Mahl (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) was 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored.

Buffalo State visited Oneonta on Sunday, and split a doubleheader, falling 7-2 in the opener, and then rebounding with a 7-0 win in the second game. In the first contest, the Bengals allowed four unearned runs and could only record five hits at the plate. Tiffany Ciolek (Great Valley/Salamanca) was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Rammacher was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Willats was 1-for-3 with a double. In the second game, Beiter led the Bengals to victory for the sixth time this season, allowing just two hits and fanning six. Mahl led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Menth was 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Buffalo State is 12-6 overall and 3-1 in SUNYAC play.

What's next?

Buffalo State will open an eight-game home stand on Monday with a doubleheader against Geneseo. Rochester will visit on Tuesday and Plattsburgh and Potsdam will come to Buffalo on Friday and Saturday.

TRACK & FIELD - Team Competes University of Rochester Alumni Invitational

Buffalo State competed at the University of Rochester Invitational on Saturday, as the women finished sixth of 17 teams with 40 points, while the men also finished sixth out of 17 teams with a total score of 40.

On the women's side, Deisree Gibson (Rochester/Edison Tech) took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.21, and also placed third in the 100-meter finishing in 12.57. Celestine Coney (Lyons/Lyons) captured first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.65, and Linda Williams (Rochester/Edison Tech) took fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.58.

For the men, Justin Muise (Kenmore/Kenmore West) took first in the 400-meter with a time of 48.24, and second in the 200-meter finishing in 22.08. AJ Walsh (Hamburg/Frontier) placed third in the 3,000-meter run crossing the line in 10:03.77, while Rob Kozlowski (Elma/Iroquois) took fourth in the discus with a throw of 38.31 meters.
