Women's Soccer Wins a Pair; Men's Soccer Earns Tie; Volleyball Opens SUNYAC Play; Tennis Captures First Win; Cross Country Runs at St. Lawrence; Football Falls in Homecoming

WOMEN'S SOCCER (3-6, 1-2) - Bengals Win Back to Back

Buffalo State won its second and third games of the year this weekend at home on the North practice field, defeating SUNYIT and Cazenovia.

On Saturday Buffalo State hosted SUNYIT, and earned its first SUNYAC win of the year, 2-1. The Bengals leading goal scorer Gina Monaco (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) opened the scoring 48 minutes into the game. Just three minutes later, Lucy Bauda (West Seneca/Orchard Park) scored what would prove to be the game winner as the Bengals went on to the 2-1 victory. Junior Amy Drozen (Willamsville/Willamsville East) also had a strong game for the Bengals, recording 10 shots and two assists, as Buffalo State outshot SUNYIT 33-1.

Buffalo State recorded its third win of the season on Sunday with a 12-1 trouncing of Cazenovia. Once again Monaco opened the scoring for the Bengals, scoring just 1:02 into the game. Monaco would finish the day with four goals and one assist. Every Bengal saw playing time, and several players had multiple point games, including Drozen who tallied one goal and three assists. Penny Burg (S. Wales/Iriquois) had two goals and one assist, Lindsay Cashmore (Clarence/Clarence) notched one goal and two assists, and Bauda scored twice. Cindy Williams (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) and Colleen Fennell (Hamburg/Frontier) added single goals to round out the Bengals scoring.

This pair of wins improved Buffalo State's record to 3-6 overall, and 1-2 in SUNYAC competition.

Who's Next?

The Bengals will be on the road for two SUNYAC games next weekend, visiting New Paltz on Saturday, and Oneonta on Sunday.

Record Watch?

Amy Drozen (Williamsville/Williamsville East) tied a school record for assists in a game with three against Cazenovia and is only two assists shy of tying the Buffalo State career assist record (20). Freshman Gina Monaco has netted nine goals this season and is only four goals away from matching the school's single season goal record.

MEN'S SOCCER (2-5-1, 0-2) - Buffalo State Earns Tie at Elmira

Buffalo State played two games this week, recording a loss at home to RIT, and a tie on the road with Elmira.

Wednesday night the RIT Tigers visited Coyer Field and beat the Bengals 4-1. Buffalo State was out-shot 18-7 in the game. Tom Huebsch (Buffalo/St. Joes) scored the lone Bengals goals.

Buffalo State traveled to Elmira on Saturday, and returned with a 2-2 tie. After falling behind 1-0 in the 38th minute, sophomore Jon Lewis (Newport, WHALES/St. Teilus) tied the game at 1-1 on a pass from Brian Miller (Tonawanda/Kenmore East). The Bengals again fell behind for a second time, but senior Dave Aslin (Rochester/Gates Chili) scored at the 68 minute mark to knot the score for good. Goalie Kevin Senator (Scottsville/Wheatland-Chili) had a strong game between the pipes, recording 7 saves in 110 minutes played. Buffalo State held a 26-11 advantage in shots.

The Bengals record is now 2-5-1 overall, and 0-2 in SUNYAC play.

Who's Next?

Buffalo State will play three games this week. On Tuesday the Bengals hit the road and play under the lights at St. John fisher at 7 p.m. Buffalo State will host New Paltz at 4 p.m. on Friday, and then SUNYIT comes to Coyer Field for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL (11-8/2-2) - Volleyball in the Middle after First Round of Pool Play

Buffalo State won its final tune-up against D'Youville on Wednesday, and traveled to Fredonia on the weekend for the First Round of SUNYAC Pool Play, splitting four matches.

The Bengals downed the Spartans at home on Wednesday night, 30-7, 30-16 and 23-25. Monica Polka (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter) led the Bengals offense with 10 kills, while Lisa Fioretti (Derby/Lakeshore) added eight kills and Krista Wierzbicki (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) served five aces.

Buffalo State opened the SUNYAC schedule at Steele Hall in Fredonia on Friday, sweeping Brockport 30-25, 32-30 and 31-29. Lisa Herrscher (Clarence/Clarence) paced Buffalo State to victory, as she recorded 16 kills and nine digs. Meanwhile, Denise Jedynak (Hamburg/Frontier) recorded 15 digs and Polka had seven digs and pounded 14 kills.

Buffalo State met Geneseo in the day-one nightcap, and was defeated in straight games, 26-30, 20-30 and 19-30. Fioretti posted a .666 hitting percentage with five digs, while Herrscher had three digs, three blocks and four kills, and Wierzbicki tallied 14 assists and four blocks.

Buffalo State got back in the win column in Saturday's opening match against Oswego. The Bengals nearly let the match slip away, but finally prevailed 30-25, 30-10, 28-30, 18-30 and 15-12. Wierzbicki recorded 40 assists and 13 digs in the winning effort. Polka dominated the net with 23 kills and four blocks. Herrscher added seven kills, seven blocks and 10 digs.

In the final First Round match, Buffalo State fell for the second time, 34-36, 19-30 and 22-30 at the hands of Fredonia. Herrscher led the Bengals with 13 digs, and Polka had 14 kills and 10 digs. Vicky Manos (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) recorded 12 digs and nine kills.

Buffalo State is now 11-8 overall and 2-2 through the First Round of SUNYAC Pool Play.

Who's Next?

Buffalo State will return to the Sports Arena this Thursday for its only match of the week against St. John Fisher at 7 p.m.

Half Way There?

Buffalo State is 2-2 in SUNYAC play through the first half of the regular season. The Second Round of Pool Play will be held October 25-26 at Geneseo. Brockport and Geneseo are tied at 3-1, followed by Buffalo State and Fredonia at 2-2, and Oswego in the basement of the West Division at 0-4. The top three teams at the end of Round Two will qualify for the playoffs. Currently, the Bengals would be on the outside looking in as Fredonia holds the head-to-head tie-breaker.

TENNIS - (1-7) Bengals Capture First Victory

Buffalo State played four matches in six days this past week, and captured its first victory of the season at Oswego on Saturday.

The Bengals overcame a five-person roster and a pair of forfeits at sixth singles and third doubles to hold on for a 5-4 win at Oswego. Buffalo State swept the top-three singles matches, led by Melissa Kulju (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) at first singles, who won 6-2, 4-6 and 6-4. Amanda Coats (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) won her first match of the year in the second spot, by scores of 6-4 and 7-5. Molly Macpherson (Clarence/Clarence) came from behind to earn her first collegiate single victory at No. 3, 2-6, 6-4 and 7-5. Coats and Macpherson took the win at first doubles 8-4 and Kulju and Jill Martorana (Rochester/Greece-Arcadia) completed the Bengals' scoring at second doubles, 8-6.

Buffalo State dropped its other three matches during the week, falling 9-0 in all three against Fredonia, RIT and Alfred.

Buffalo State is now 1-7 on the season.

Who's Next?

Buffalo State will have a full week of practice before hosting Cortland and Wells on Saturday and Sunday.

CROSS COUNTRY - Men and Women Compete at St. Lawrence

The Buffalo State cross country teams competed Saturday at the Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational, hosted by St. Lawrence University.

The men finished fourth out of seven teams with 100 points. Leading the way for the Bengals was AJ Walsh (Hamburg/Frontier) with a time of 27:07, good for ninth place overall. Finishing 11th and 15th overall were juniors Mike Herron (West Seneca/West Seneca East) and Matt Kubiak (lakeview/Frontier) completing the course in 27:32 and 27:59 respectively.

The women finished seventh out of eight teams in the 5k race. Tiffany Knarr (East Aurora/Iroquois) was Buffalo State's top finisher, placing 12th overall with a time of 20:32. Finishing in 36th and 37th places respectively were Tammy Putt (Allegany/Allegany) and Nichole Van Hoesen (Stamford/Stamford Central) with times of 21:32 and 21:35

Buffalo State will travel to the Geneseo Invite this Saturday, to battle an excellent field of runners.

FOOTBALL (0-4) - Cortland Spoils Bengals Homecoming, 28-0

Cortland State won the 19th battle against Upstate New York rival Buffalo State, 28-0, dropping the Bengals to 0-4 in front of a Coyer Field homecoming crowd of 2,365. Cortland improved to 3-1.

After a scoreless first quarter, Cortland drew first blood at 7:22 of the second quarter when JJ Tutwiler hit Rocco Colucci in the endzone from 30 yards out on a third down and eleven play. The touchdown strike capped a seven play, 63-yard drive, and a Greg Oostmeyer extra point put the Red Dragons in front 7-0. After trading possessions, Cortland forced Buffalo State into a fourth down and fifteen at its own 22-yardline with less than a minute remaining in the half. On the ensuing punt attempt, Cortland's Matt Gates broke through the Bengals' line, and blocked the punt, and continued to take the ball into the endzone. The successful point after made the score 14-0 in favor of the Red Dragons heading into the intermission.

After a pair of stalled possessions to start the second half, Cortland orchestrated a 47-yard, 11-play drive that consumed 4:23 and was highlighted by a Steve Davis two-yard touchdown run, extending the Red Dragons lead again, to 21-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Gates would recover a Bengals fumble and scamper 23 yards four his second score of the day. After a fourth Oostmeyer kick, Cortland led 28-0.

On the day, Gates scored a pair of touchdowns for Cortland, and had an interception, a fumble recovery, a blocked punt and two pass breakups. Eric Bramoff led the Red Dragons with 15 tackles. Cortland quarterback JJ Tutwiler was 14-for-24 with 157 yards and Davis led the rushing attack with 61 yards on 18 carries.

Ahmir Cole (Buffalo/Seneca) led the Bengals rushers with 83 yards on 12 touches, and Billy Edwards (Buffalo/McKinley) reeled in seven catches for 40 yards. Mariano Granata (Lewiston/Lewiston-Porter) was 16-for-28 for 75 yards, and threw four interceptions. Tony Favata (Hamburg/Hamburg) and Nick Warren (Cheektowara/W. Seneca East) led the Bengal with 11 tackles, and Tyree Parker (Buffalo/Burgard) added 10 stops.

Who's Next?

Buffalo State will head back on the road this Saturday, as it looks for its first win of the season at Brockport at 1:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles edged the Bengals 9-7 at Coyer Field last season.
