VOLLEYBALL (19-8/2-2) - Volleyball Continues to Roll into SUNYAC Pool Play

Buffalo State won three more matches this past week as it continued to prepare for the second round of SUNYAC Pool Play this weekend at Geneseo.

On Wednesday, the Bengals traveled to Penn State Behrend and swept the Lions 30-20, 30-27 and 30-26. Monica Polka (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter) tallied 14 kills, nine digs and four blocks to lead the Bengals. Krista Wierzbicki (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) dished out 24 assists and recorded 11 digs and Lisa Herrscher (Clarence/Clarence) recorded 12 digs, six blocks and four kills.

The Bengals were in Glassboro, NJ on Saturday and played against host Rowan and Arcadia, sweeping both matches. Buffalo State downed Rowan 31-29, 30-26 and 30-16. Polka hammered out 25 kills and had 12 digs, and Wierzbicki added 37 assists. Katie Sansone (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) had 12 digs and Vicky Manos (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) had 11 digs.

Buffalo State also defeated Arcadia in straight games, 30-14, 30-21 and 30-27. Polka added 14 more kills and Wierzbicki had 35 assists. Herrscher added seven kills, 10 digs and two aces.

Who's Next?

Buffalo State will play at Geneseo for the second round of SUNYAC Pool Play this Friday and Saturday.

Brockport: 3-1, Geneseo: 3-1, Buffalo State: 2-2, Fredonia: 2-2, Oswego: 0-4.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (5-12, 2-7) - Bengals Drop Two SUNYAC Games

Buffalo State played three games this week, posting a 1-2 mark.

On Tuesday, Buffalo State hosted D'Youville at Coyer Field and trounced the Lady Spartans, 8-0. The Bengals opened the scoring only eight minutes into the game, when freshman Gina Monaco (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) scored her first of three goals in the game, she also added an assist. Penny Burg (S. Wales/Iriquois) netted two goals for Buffalo State, and Lindsay Cashmore (Clarence/Clarence) had two assists on a team-leading 16 shots for the Bengals. Goaltenders Erin Strassburg (N.Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) and Nastassja Dasque (Brooklyn/ A. Philip Randolph) each played a half and combined for the shutout. Four Buffalo State records fell during the game. Monaco set the records for goals in a season with 16, and also points in a season with 35, while Amy Drozen (Willamsville/Williamsville East) set the record for assists in a season with 10, and a career with 21.

Friday, Buffalo State traveled to Oswego, and was defeated by the Lakers, 3-1. Cashmore scored the lone goal for the Bengals, on a pass from Drozen, with ten minutes left in the game.

On Saturday, the Bengals played in Cortland, and were defeated by the Red Dragons, 5-0. Nikole Flannery (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) recorded four shots for Buffalo State.

The Bengals overall record is now 5-12, and 2-7 in SUNYAC play.

Who's Next?

Buffalo State will play its final two games of the season this week. On Tuesday night, the Bengals will travel to Fredonia for a 3 p.m. game, and then on Saturday, Buffalo State will play its final game of the season at the University of Pitt-Bradford.

MEN'S SOCCER (4-10-2, 2-6) Bengals Drop Two SUNYAC Home Games

Buffalo State opened the week with a non-conference tie, but dropped a pair of SUNYAC games on the weekend.

On Tuesday, the Bengals traveled to Penn. St. Behrend, and tied the Lions 1-1. The game remained scoreless until the 84th minute when Penn State Behrend finally beat freshman goaltender Kevin Senator (Scottsville/Wheatland-Chili) who had six saves in the scoreless first half. Richard Namulala (Kenmore/Kenmore West) then scored four minutes later on a penalty shot to tie the game at 1-1. After twenty minutes of overtime, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

On Friday, the Oswego Lakers came to Coyer Field, and defeated the Benglas, 2-0. Mike Abrams (Allegany/Allegany) and Justin Weber (Amherst/Amherst) each recorded three shots, but the Bengals could not put one past the Oswego goalkeeper.

Saturday, Buffalo State played host to the Cortland Red Dragons. Cortland, who won the SUNYAC Championship last season handed the Bengals their second loss of the weekend, 6-4. Namulala led the Bengals charge with one goal and one assist, while Dave Aselin (Rochester/Gates-Chili), Stu Hanson (Lincoln, England/N. Kesteven), and Brian Miller (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) each chipped in with a goal. After trailing 5-2 at halftime the Bengals played a solid second half, but were unable to overcome their first half deficit.

Buffalo State is currently 4-10-2 overall, and 2-6 in SUNYAC play.

Who's Next?

Buffalo State will play only one game this week, as the season winds down. On Wednesday, the Bengals will host Fredonia at 3 p.m. on Coyer Field.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY - Bengals Open at National Champion Elmira

Buffalo State opened the 2002-03 season in the same arena as it finished the 2001-02 season and defending national champion Elmira proved to be too much for the Bengals.

On Friday, the Bengals were defeated 7-0 by the Soaring Eagles and were out-shot 69-8. Last season's ECAC West Goaltender of the Year Mary Keddie (Williamsville/Buffalo Bisons) made 62 saves in the loss.

Buffalo State looked for revenge on Saturday, but Elmira continued its dominance, skating past the Bengals 10-0. Elmira recorded 55 shots against Buffalo State's five.

Who's Next?

Buffalo State will open its home schedule this weekend against Cortland. The Red Dragons will visit the Ice Arena on Saturday at 4 p.m. and again on Sunday at 1 p.m.

CROSS COUNTRY - Bengals Ready for SUNYAC Championship

Buffalo State had last week off to prepare for this Saturday's SUNYAC Championship at Fredonia. Last season the men took sixth of 10 teams, while the women placed fifth.

SWIMMING & DIVING - Bengals to Open Season Versus Genseo

Buffalo State will open Head Coach Mike Switalski's second season this Friday when they welcome SUNYAC Champion Geneseo to Kissinger Pool for a 6 p.m. dual meet.

FOOTBALL (0-6) - Bengals Rested for Montclair State

Buffalo State used its bye week to prepare for Montclair State. The Bengals will host the 3-3 Red Hawks this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Coyer Field.
