WOMENS SOCCER (1-0) Bengals Crush Hilbert In Season Opener
The Buffalo State Womens Soccer team defeated Hilbert 5-1 in its season opener at Coyer Field on Saturday.
The Hawks jumped out to a one-goal lead at the 8:40 mark, but the Bengals scored three goals in six minutes before halftime to lock up the win. Sophomore Gina Monaco (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) tied the game at the 28:18 mark off of a pass from freshman defender Colleen Ingerto (Smyrna/Sherburne-Earlville). Monaco would go on a three-goal tear, including the eventual game-winner assisted by junior forward Katie Zariczy (Great Valley/Ellicottville). Monacos third goal of the game came on a penalty kick after Hilbert was called for a handball on a shot inside its six-yard box. Monaco would score her fourth and final goal of the game with six minutes to go in regulation. Three minutes later freshman midfielder Amanda Cendrowski (Sloan/JFK) would score off a pass from senior Lindsay Cashmore (Clarence/Clarence) to finish the Bengals attack. Junior goalkeeper Jessica Bingerman (Great Valley/Ellicottville) registered one save in the win for the Bangals.
The win marked the second straight year that the Bengals have started the season 1-0, and the sixth straight victory over a twelve year span against Hilbert.

The Bengals travel to Dickinson, PA on Saturday and Sunday to play in the Dickinson Tournament. Buffalo State will square off against Frostburg and DeSales.
MENS SOCCER (1-1) - Bengals Split Openers at LaRoche Tourney
Buffalo State traveled to Pittsburgh, PA on the weekend to open its 2003 season at the LaRoche Invitational, and split a pair of games, losing the opener against the host school and beating DeSales on Sunday.
On Saturday, the Bengals could not get their offense to click as they fired 10 shots at the LaRoche goalkeeper, but could not get one past him as they lost by a 1-0 margin. LaRoches only goal cam in the games 86th minute. Freshman Dave Grant (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) made 10 saves in his debut with the Bengals.
Buffalo State rebounded on Sunday, with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over DeSales. Brian Miller (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) started the scoring just over four minutes into the game, but DeSales notched a pair of markers in a six-minute span to take a 2-1 lead. Miller evened the score just before halftime with his second of the game, and Jared Hulschoff (Lockport/Lockport) netted the game-winner in the 78th minute on an assist from Miller. Freshman Shawn McDonell (West Seneca/West Seneca East) turned aside nine DeSales shots for his first win.

Buffalo State will play just one game this week when it travels to Daemen on Tuesday.
VOLLEYBALL (0-4) - Bengals Off to Rough Start Against Tough Competition
Buffalo State opened its 2003 season under first-year head coach Adrienne Turley against some top-ranked competition at the Mt. St. Joseph Invitational in Cincinnati, OH, and returned home with a 0-4 record.
The Bengals opened the season against DePauw and fell short 21-30, 23-30 and 10-30. Krista Wierzbicki (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) highlighted the teams individual efforts with 24 assists, eight digs and six blocks. Vicky Manos (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) registered a team-high eight kills and added 13 digs, and Denise Jedynak (Hamburg/Hamburg) tallied 21 digs.
Buffalo State battled the ninth-ranked team in the nation Mt. St. Joseph in its second match, and was defeated 11-30, 16-30 and 14-30. Jen Breier (Grand Island/Grand Island) notched five kills and Jedynak recorded nine digs.
The Bengals fell to Capital in the opening match of the second day by scores of 14-30, 21-30 and 25-30. Manos led the Bengals offensive attack with 10 kills and also added eight digs and three blocks. Wierzbicki dished out 26 assists, and Jedynak recorded 14 digs. Keri Bumgardner (Babylon/West Babylon) hammered out seven kills.
Buffalo State closed the tournament with a loss to Baldwin Wallace by a difference of 11-30, 18-30 and 20-30. Manos registered seven kills and seven digs, and Wierzbicki had 14 assists. Jedynak continued to anchor the defense with 12 digs.

Buffalo State will look to get into the win column on Tuesday when it travels to Hilbert. The Bengals will go back on the road on Friday and Saturday when they compete at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic.
