FOOTBALL (1-7) Case Western Edges Buffalo State, 23-21
Running back Brandon McDowell carried the ball 35 times for 150 yards including 75 yards in the fourth quarter for Case Western (5-3) as his Spartans edged Buffalo State (1-7) 23-21 Saturday at Coyer Field.
McDowell opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run to cap off a 70-yard Case Western drive on its first possession of the game. The Spartans missed the point after attempt and led 6-0. Buffalo State responded at 7:53 of the first quarter on a 29-yard touchdown strike from Mike Mikolaichik (Hilton/Hilton) to HT Williams (Syracuse/Christian Bros.) to give the Bengals a 7-6 lead. The Spartans reclaimed the lead early in the second stanza, however, when Jason Cellura connected with Marshaun Minter from 10 yards out. Cellura found David Kallevig later in the quarter, this time from 11 yards, to extend the Case Western lead to 20-7. Buffalo State pulled within a score by the intermission, when TJ Cottrell (E. Amherst/Williamsville South) reeled in a nine-yard Mikolachik pass with just 17 seconds remaining in the half to make the score 20-14.
Case Western’s only second half points came on a 40-yard field goal by Ian Jaquette at 6:15 of the third quarter to extend the margin to 23-14. The Bengals drove 70 yards on 12 plays late in the third quarter and freshman full back Will Bryant (Washington, DC/Bishop Ireton) forced the ball in the end zone on a fourth and one play to cut the deficit to 23-21. The Bengals would not threaten again, however, and McDowell and company would grind out the final 5:12 to hang on for the victory.
Cellura was 16-for-24 for 192 yards and had 16 rushes for 64 yards. Jacob Baker caught five balls for 65 yards to lead the receiving corps. On defense, Mike Collins led the Spartans with 13 tackles, including a sack and nine solo stops. Michael DePaulo added nine tackles, and Devin Harris had an interception and a 73 yard return.
For the Bengals, Curtis Hathcock (Buffalo/Bennett) rushed 23 times for 115 yards, and Mikolaichik went 19-34 for 188 yards. Williams totaled five catches for 75 yards. Nick Warren (Cheektowaga/W. Seneca East) led the defense with 14 tackles, Hank Pirowski (Lackawanna/Lackawanna) had 13, and Nick Columbo (Sanborn/Starpoint) made 11 stops.
MEN’S HOCKEY (1-2) Bengals Start with Two Losses
Buffalo State earned the runner-up prize in the All-Sport Invitational this weekend at the Ice Arena.
In the Friday’s game, Buffalo State (1-2-0) jumped all over visiting Johnson & Wales (0-1-0) and skated to a 10-2 victory. Freshman Mike DeMarco (Niagara Falls/Ft. Erie Meteors) led the attack with a goal and a Buffalo State record six assists. Greg Prybylski (Cheektowaga/Capital Centre) tallied three goals and line-mate Mark Yoder (Ft. Wayne, IN/Grand Rapids) added two goals and two assists. Mike Zalewski (Grand Rapids, MI/Bancroft Hawks), Morgan McElman (Bayside, NB/Elmira Jackals), Ryan Marvin (Newbury Park, CA/Morrisville) and Matt Samson (W. Vancouver, BC/Delta Ice Hawks) also scored for the Bengals.
In the final game of the tournament, Hobart (1-1) defeated host Buffalo State (1-3) by a 6-4 margin. The Statesmen jumped out to a two-goal first period lead and would extend their lead to 4-0 early in the second period. Buffalo State would finally cut the lead to two goals on a pair of Zalewski goals. McElman, who had a four-point night, scored a goal in the opening minutes of the final frame to give the Bengals hope. Hobart would score the eventual game-winner for the Statesmen with under ten minutes to play in regulation. Sean Castagna (San Jose, CA/Bonnyville Pontiacs) would add a late goal for the Bengals to climb within one with 1:23 to play on the clock. Buffalo State opened the season with a split of non-conference games against conference-rival Cortland.
Buffalo State opened its season Saturday at Cortland in a non-conference game, and lost 4-3 in overtime. Janelle Schmitt (Arlington, WA/Northwest Admirals) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 4:09 into the game, but Cortland evened the score late in the opening period. The Red Dragons scored the only goal of the second stanza, but Emma Wadsworth (Arlington, VA/Reston Raiders) knotted the score at 2-2 early in the final frame with assists from Schmitt and Nicole Jewell (Fenton, MI/Honeybaked). Sophomore Amanda Uschold (Rochester/Rochester Edge) scored her first career goal midway through the period to put the Bengals ahead. Schmitt added the lone assist. Cortland lit the lamp just 1:01 later however, and then scored again 2:27 into the overtime period to claim the victory. Mary Keddie (Williamsville/Buffalo Bisons) made 32 saves as the Bengals were outshot 36-27.
Buffalo State defeated host Cortland 3-1 Sunday to improve to 1-1 on the young season. Uschold opened the scoring midway through the first period, but Cortland responded to tie the score six minutes later. After a scoreless second period, Tara Ostempowski (Lancaster/Buffalo Bisons) and Jennifer Downey (Freeville/Ithaca Stars) notched a pair of third period goals to give Buffalo State the victory. Crissy Michalek (W. Seneca/Buffalo Saints) made 34 saves in her debut with the Bengals to earn the win between the pipes.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (8-10-1) Bengals Held Scoreless in Season Finale
Buffalo State was unable to find the back of the net in its season finale, as it was defeated 1-0 by visiting Penn State Behrend Wednesday on Towers Field.
The Lions scored in the 20th minute and held on for the one-goal victory in a physical contest that saw the two teams combine for 28 fouls. Buffalo State had its best scoring chance in the games final minute when a shot from 15 yards out sailed just inches above the cross bar. Penn State Behrend outshot the Bengals 16-10.
Buffalo State finished the season with its highest win total since 1985 with an 8-10-1 overall record.
VOLLEYBALL (14-23) Bengals Finish Season on Sour Note
Buffalo State wrapped up its season this weekend at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational and dropped all three matches to finish the year 14-23.
In yesterday's opener the host school beat the Bengals 30-11, 30-18 and 30-28. Sam Damstetter (W. Seneca/W. Seneca East) recorded nine kills and two blocks.
In the nightcap, the Bengals fell to Susquehanna, 30-21, 22-30, 22-30 and 16-30. Vicky Manos (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) tallied 19 kills and two aces, and Krista Wierzbicki (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) had 39 assists.
Buffalo State finished its season today against Allegany, falling 19-30, 27-30 and 27-30. Manos had 16 kills Denise Jedynak (Hamburg/Frontier) recorded 10 digs.
Buffalo State finishes season 14-23 overall.
