MEN’S BASKETBALL (3-2/2-1) – Buffalo State Opens Conference Play with Two Wins

Perry Davis (Buffalo/Seneca) scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help lead defending SUNYAC Champion Buffalo State (2-1/1-0) past Oswego (2-2/0-1) on Tuesday in the conference opener for both teams.

Buffalo State took a 41-28 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Lakers closed the gap in the second half, pulling within four points at 68-64 with 34 seconds to play. Buffalo State hit six consecutive field goals in the waning moments, however, to seal the victory.

Joshua Becker (Hamburg/Frontier) added 11 points for the Bengals, and Kevin Roche (Williamsville/Williamsville East) and Justin Konst (Williamsville/Williamsville East) each scored nine points. Oswego was led by Dave Ponza’s (Solvay/Solvay) 24 points and eight rebounds. Luke Sinkler (Bay Shore/St. John the Baptist) scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Lakers.

Buffalo State overcame a 12-point deficit in the final six minutes of regulation time to force an extra period, and eventually prevailed 77-76 in overtime at Oneonta on Friday.

The Bengals never led in the second half, and finally knotted the score for the first time when Josh Becker (Hamburg/Frontier) made a free throw with three seconds remaining in regulation. The Bengals ended the game in similar fashion, as Justin Konst (Williamsville/Wil. East) hit a free throw with only one second to play to give the Bengals the win.

Becker finished at the team's leading scorer with 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Perry Davis (Buffalo/Seneca) added 17 points and 14 rebounds. Mike Miranto (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) and Jeremy Konst (Williamsville/Wil. East) each score 11 points. Justin Konst finished the game with eight points.

Buffalo State lost its first conference game of the season on Saturday at SUNYIT, falling 65-43 while shooting a dismal 25.8-percent from the field. The Bengals trailed just 26-24 at halftime, before the Wildcats assembled a 27-4 run to open the second stanza and cruised to the 22-point victory. Justin Konst (Williamsville/Wil. East) was Buffalo State's leading scorer with just eight points. Four Bengals added six points.

Buffalo State fell to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in SUNYAC play. The Bengals will return to action on December 27 at the Marietta (OH) Holiday Shrine Tournament versus St. Norbert.





MEN’S HOCKEY (2-11/1-6) – Bengals Win First SUNYAC Game

Buffalo State dropped a 5-3 decision at Geneseo Firday, despite carrying a 3-2 lead into the third period. Ryan Marvin, Mike Zalewski and Josh Magnuson all scored for the Bengals. Morgan McElman added two assists, and Adam Horvath made 48 saves between the pipes.

Buffalo State earned its first SUNYAC victory of the season on Saturday, edging host Brockport 6-5. Buffalo State played catch-up for most of the game until freshman Josh Magnuson finally put the Bengals ahead for good with just 4:31 remaining in regulation. Greg Prybylski added a pair of goals for the Bengals. Matt Samson, Mike DeMarco and Mike Zalewski also scored single tallies, and defenseman Sean O'Connell registered three assists. Adam Horvath made 45 saves between the pipes to earn the win.

Buffalo State improved to 2-11 overall and 1-6 in SUNYAC. The Bengals will not return to action until they travel to Plymouth State on January 9.



WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (3-3/2-1) – Bengals Go 2-1 in SUNYAC

Monique Hanks’ (Liverpool/Liverpool) career-high 23 points, eight rebounds and eight steals led Buffalo State (2-2/1-0) past Oswego (1-1/0-1), 66-63, tonight in the SUNYAC opener for both teams. Buffalo State took the lead trailed by as many as five points down the stretch, but Desi Gibson (Rochester/Edison Tech) filead for good with a 15-foot jumper with 17.7 seconds remaining, and Jacey Brooks (Machais/Franklinville) iced the win with a pair of free throws in the closing seconds. Brooks finished the game with 10 points and six rebounds. Freshman Darnika Moseley (Liverpool/Liverpool) recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 14 boards. Gibson added six points in the win.

Buffalo State suffered its first conference loss of the season on Friday with a 69-55 loss at Oneonta. The Bengals trailed by just 32-30 at halftime and Oneonta pulled away in the second half for the 14-point victory. Jacey Brooks (Machais/Franklinville) led the Bengals with 13 points, and Darnika Moseley (Liverpool/Liverpool) scored 10 points.

Buffalo State earned a 56-51 victory on Saturday at SUNYIT this afternoon despite shooting just 31.7-percent from the field and being outrebounded 40-38. The Bengals held a 30-24 advantage at the intermission and held the Wildcats off the scoreboard in the final 3:48 to preserve the five-point victory. Beth Hogan (Great Valley/Salamanca) and Desi Gibson (Rochester/Edison Tech) led the Bengals' scorers with 10 points each. Jacey Brooks (Machias/Franklinville) and LaShay Minigan (Cypress, TX/Cy-Fair) each added eight points.

Buffalo State improved to 3-3 and 2-1 in conference play. The Bengals will not return to the hardwood until January 4 when they will host nationally-ranked Rochester.
