TRACK & FIELD – Bengals Earn Seconds at Ohio Northern

Buffalo State's indoor track and field teams competed at the Ohio Northern Invite tonight and both the men and the women placed second of four teams.

James Howze (Amherst/Sweet Home) led the Bengals with a pair of first-place finishes in the 800m (2:05.14) and in the 1500m run (4:22.18) Other individual victories were submitted by Justin Muise (Kenmore/Kenmore West) (300m/35.75), Dan Hargrave (Dansville/Dansville) (5000m/16:44.91), Tim Giagos (Rochester/Gates-Chili) (500m/1:09.61), and Matt Kubiak (Lakeview/Frontier) (1000m/2:37.79). Rob Kozlowski (Elma/Iroquois) set a school record in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 13.24m.

On the women's side, Linda Williams (Rochester/Edison Tech) earned a victory in the 55m dash (7.50), and Jackie Kirsch (E. Aurora/E. Aurora) won the triple jump, with distance of 9.74m (31'11.5").

SWIMMING & DIVING – Bengals Finish Season at SUNYAC Championships

Buffalo State concluded its season Saturday at the SUNYAC Championships with the men finishing sixth of nine, and the women placing ninth of nine.

Day #1 - Tom Schilke (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) turned in the best performance on the men's side, placing fourth in the one-meter dive with a score of 349.25. Eric Hastings (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) also had a top-eight individual finish, touching seventh in the 500 free with a time of 5:00.29. The Bengals also had a sixth-place finish in the 400 medley relay as Derek Stoklosa (W. Seneca/W. Seneca West), Dave Papke (Woodlawn/St. Francis), Rich Gaczewski (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) and Mark Manka (W. Seneca/W. Seneca West) clocked 3:51.24. On the women's side, Claudia Fanti (Hauppage/Hauppage), Mary Clausen (Churchville/Churchville-Chili), Casey Seier (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) and Susan Stiner (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) combined to place seventh in the 400 medley relay in 4:29.22. Fanti, Seier and Stiner also teamed with Marie Ryer (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) to touch eighth in the 200 free relay in 1:47.17. Mindy Wood (Middlesex/Whitman) added a 13th-place finish in the 500 free in 5:32.40, and Ryer was 15th in the 50 free in 26.28.

Day #2 - Highlights on the men's side included Rich Gaczewski (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) placing 10th in the 400 IM (4:32.16), and Dave Papke (Woodlawn/St. Francis) finishing 10th in the 100 breast (1:04.99). Derek Stoklosa (W. Seneca/W. Seneca West), Eric Hastings (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) and Mark Manka (W. Seneca/W. Seneca West) finished 10th, 11th and 12th respectively in the 200 free. On the women's side, Casie Seier (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) finished 14th in the 100 fly (1:05.55), and Mary Clausen (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) placed 14th in the 100 breast (1:14.29).

Day #3 - On the men's side, Tom Schilke (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) placed fifth in the 3-meter dive with a score of 368.05. Rich Gaczewski (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) placed eighth in the 1650 free (17:53.45), and Matt Palminteri (Dingmans Ferry, DE/Delaware Valley) finished seventh in the 200 breast (2:23.90).

For the women, Mindy Wood (Middlesex/Marcus Whitman) set a new Buffalo State record with a time of 18:49.16 in the 1650 free, placing fifth.

MEN’S HOCKEY – Bengals Split Weekend; Miss Playoffs

Buffalo State fell to 6-16-0 overall and 2-10 in the SUNYAC after losing a heartbreaking game 4-3, at home against the 15th ranked Geneseo Knights on Friday.

After giving up a goal in the opening minutes of the first period, Buffalo State junior Josh Magnuson (Chisago, MN/Lincoln Stars) knotted the game at 1-1 with just over half the period to play. Geneseo would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission on a powerplay goal with 0:05 left on the clock.

Bengal forward Greg Prybylski (Cheektowaga/Capitol Centre Pride) scored the second period’s only goal to the game at 2-2. Buffalo State captured the lead for the first time in the game just 40 seconds in the third period when sophomore Mike Zalewski (Grand Rapids, MI/Bancroft Hawks) scored his tenth goal of the season. Buffalo State couldn’t hold on to the lead as Geneseo scored the game-tying goal at the 6:32 mark of the third period. Blue Knight Justin Corio sealed the game for Geneseo on a powerplay goal with 2:02 remaining in the game. Bengal goaltender Sean Sheehan (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Abitibi Eskimos) made 38 stops as Buffalo State was outshot in the contest 42-20.

Buffalo State earned their third SUNYAC victory on Saturday with a 6-4 victory at home against the Brockport Golden Eagles. The Bengals improved to an overall record of 7-17-0 and a conference mark of 3-10 with the win.

Bengal sophomore Brian Janke (Anchorage, AK/Buffalo Lightning) put Buffalo State up 1-0 with his second goal of the season eight minutes into the game. Forward Mike Zalewski (Grand Rapids, MI/Bancroft Hawks) increased the Bengal lead to 2-0 after he buried the puck in the net on a pass from defender Sean O’Connell (Buffalo/Capitol Centre Pride). Zalewski also had two assists in the contest, one coming on the first Bengal goal and one on the eventual game-winning goal. The Golden Eagles closed the gap to 2-1 with a goal minutes before the end of the first period.

Buffalo State senior captain Mark Yoder (Ft. Wayne, IN/Grand Rapids) regained the Bengal’s two goal lead with a powerplay goal early in the second. After a Brockport goal that put the Golden Eagles within one, Yoder again scored to put the Bengals up 4-2. Forward Morgan McElman (Bayside, NB/Elmira Jr. Jackals) netted the eventual game-winning goal with less then two minutes remaining in the period to put the Bengals up 5-2 at the start of the final frame.

Brockport scored two straight goals in the third period to close the gap to 5-4 with just under six minutes to play in regulation. Junior Josh Magnuson (Chisago, MN/Lincoln Stars) broke the back of the Golden Eagle’s comeback with his seventh goal of the year to finish the game’s scoring at 6-4. Freshman goaltender Shawn Sheehan (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Abitibi Eskimos) made 35 saves in net for the Bengals. Brockport’s Scott Santora and Andy Reynolds combined for 44 saves in the loss.

Buffalo State’s victory was not enough to get them into the playoffs as Fredonia upset Geneseo tonight to make it mathematically impossible for the Bengals to play in the post season. The Bengals will play their final game of the season Tuesday night when they host the visiting Fredonia Blue Devils at 7:00 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL – Bengals Climb Back into Playoff Hunt

Randy Bills (Fairport/Fairport) tallied 21 points and nine rebounds to pace Brockport (15-6/11-1) past host Buffalo State (10-9/4-7) Tuesday night in a SUNYAC game at the Sports Arena.

The two teams combined for 22 turnovers in the opening half as Brockport fought its way to a 33-30 halftime advantage. The Bengals took the lead by one early in the second half, but Brockport regained the advantage with 16:42 to play, and never trailed again.

Perry Davis (Buffalo/Seneca) led the Bengals with 14 points and seven boards. Aaron Carter (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) added a career-high 12 points, and Joshua Becker (Hamburg/Frontier) chipped in 11.

Davis led four Bengals in double-figures with 25 points as Buffalo State (11-9/5-7) defeated Oneonta (3-17/2-10), 79-65, Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Buffalo State never trailed after the game’s opening minute as the Bengals sprinted to a 50-33 lead at the intermission. Oneonta closed the gap to 68-62 with 2:48 remaining, but Buffalo State finished the game on and 11-3 run to close out the 14-point victory.

Davis went 12-of-25 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds and added six assists. Freshman Aaron Carter (Niagara Falls/Niaga 14 points and 11 rebounds. Joshua Becker (Hamburg/Frontier) and Kevin Roche (Williamsville/Williamsville East) each added 11 points for the Bengals.

Josh Becker (Hamburg/Frontier) led four Bengals in double-figures with 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Buffalo State (12-9/6-7) past SUNYIT (12-10/6-7), 87-64, Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Buffalo State led by as many as 18 in the opening frame, and took a 41-28 lead into the intermission. The Bengals never let the Wildcats get any closer in the second half as they sprinted to the 23-point win.

Perry Davis (Buffalo/Seneca) scored 15 points and had eight rebounds and six assists for the Bengals. Jeremy Konst (Williamsville/Williamsville East) and Luis Pagan (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) each tallied 14 points in the win.

Nick Grimmer (New Hartford, NY) led SUNYIT with 16 points. Todd Wheaton (Gloversville, NY) added 13 points, and Rich Phillips (Yorktown, NY) chipped in 12 points and eight boards.

Buffalo State will host Geneseo on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL – Bengals Post 1-2 Conference Week

Jessica Welch (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) scored 22 points to lead visiting Brockport (6-14/5-7) past Buffalo State (10-10/8-3), 65-50, Tuesday at the Sports Arena.

Buffalo State led by as many as seven points early in the first half, but Brockport took the lead with 6:22 remaining in the opening stanza and never looked back. The Golden Eagles led 35-27 at the intermission, and never let the Bengals closer than five points in the second half.

Mary Ahrens (Rochester/Gates-Chili) joined Welch in double-figures with 15 points and added 11 rebounds. Meghan Squires (Johnsonville/Hoosic Valley) added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Monique Hanks (Liverpool/Liverpool) led Buffalo State with 18 points and eight rebounds. Darnika Moseley (Liverpool/Liverpool) added 11 points and eight boards, and Desi Gibson (Rochester/Edison Tech) chipped in eight points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Ann Marie Faia (Yonkers/Maria Regina) scored 25 points to lead Oneonta (15-6/10-2) past Buffalo State (10-11/8-4), 75-65, Friday at the Sports Arena.

The score was knotted at 34-34 at halftime, but the Red Dragons used a 16-2 run midway through the second stanza to open up a 65-54 lead with 5:45 remaining. Oneonta hung on down the stretch to earn the 10-point win.

Allie Sullivan (Crompond/Walter Panas) added 12 points and nine boards for Oneonta, and Melissa Donohue (Niverville/Ichabod Crane) chipped in 10 points.

Jacey Brooks (Machias/Franklinville) led the Buffalo State with 20 points. Monique Hanks (Liverpool/Liverpool) added 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Desi Gibson (Rochester/Edison Tech) chipped in nine points.

Freshman Darnika Moseley’s (Liverpool/Liverpool) double-double 16 points and 12 rebounds led Buffalo State (11-11/9-4) past SUNYIT (4-18/2-11), 67-53, Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Buffalo State opened up a 34-24 lead and never looked back as it cruised to the 14-point victory. Jacey Brooks (Machais/Franklinville) scored 12 points for the Bengals. Monique Hanks (Liverpool/Liverpool) added 10 points and seven rebounds, and Beth Hogan (Great Valley/Salamanca) chipped in seven points and a career-high nine assists.

Buffalo State will host Geneseo on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY – Bengals Fall to St. Mary’s

Buffalo State dropped to 2-17-1 after losing 4-0 Sunday at home against St. Mary’s University. The Cardinals improved to their record to 12-7-1 with the win.

The two teams played almost 19 minutes without a goal but the Cardinals scored the game’s first goal with 1:19 remaining in the first period. St. Mary’s would add two goals in the second and a goal in the third finish the scoring at 4-0. Rachel Harrison would lead the Cardinals in scoring with three points, coming on a goal and two assists. Bengal flo Saints) made 38 saves as Buffalo State was outshot 42-8 in the contest.

Buffalo State will host St. Mary’s Monday at the Buffalo State Ice Arena for at 5:00 p.m. game.
