Softball Splits Conference Opener with Fredonia

Buffalo State defeated visiting Fredonia on Tuesday in the SUNYAC opener by a 6-0 margin, but fell in the second half of the double header by a 2-0 score.

In the opening game, Lauren Mruk (Lancaster) opened the Bengals' scoring with a three-run homerun in the second inning, and Buffalo State never looked back. Mruk also had a double in the game. Tiffany Ciolek (Salamanca) and Emily Goldyn (Lancaster) were each 2-for-3 with a double. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda) was the winning pitcher, allowing just two hits in the shutout. Casey Mazurek(Dunkirk) led Fredonia at the plate, collecting both of the team's hits.

Fredonia scored a run in the first and fifth innings to win the nightcap. Laurie Hutten(Kenmore West) and Heidi Rammacher(Lakeshore) were each 2-for-3 for the Bengals. Kristen Scheffold(Lancaster)took the loss on the mound for the Bengals allowing five hits and two runs in four-and-one-third innings of work. Mazurek recorded the shutout victory on the mound for the Blue Devils, allowing just four hits over seven innings. Heather Mercer was 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Fredonia offense.

Buffalo State is now 6-6 overall and 1-1 in SUNYAC play. The Bengals will travel to Brockport this Tuesday.

Track and Field Competes at Brockport Invitational

Buffalo State joined Brockport, Fredonia, RIT, Rochester and St. Lawrence on Saturday at the Brockport Invitational, as its athletes earned victories in eight events in the non-team scored meet.

Ken Ciolek (Bradford Area) led the Bengals with four first place showings, capturing the long jump (6.26m), triple jump (13.21m), high jump (1.87m) and javelin (51.64m). Justin Muise (Kenmore West) crossed first in the 400m hurdles in 56.73. Mike Taylor (Maryvale) placed second in the triple jump (12.51m), and Rob Kozlowski (Iroquois) was second in the discus (38.79m). Chris Lape (Millbrook) added a pair of third place showings in the 400m dash (52.97) and the javelin (45.13), and Tim Giagios (Gates-Chili) was third in the 400m hurdles (58.10).

On the women's side, Mercedes Roper (City Honors) won the 100m dash in 12.78, and Desi Gibson's (Edison Tech) leap of 4.92m was enough to win the long jump. Roper and Gibson also teamed with Linda Williams (Edison Tech) and Keyia Thompkins (Edison Tech) to win the 4x100m relay with a time of 49.71. Jackie Kirsch (East Aurora) and Sarah Gedraitis (Akron) finished third in the triple jump (9.45m) and the discus (34.12m) respectively.

Both teams will return to action on April 17 at the Slippery Rock Open.

Women’s Lacrosse Topples Elmira and Medaille

Buffalo State overcame a 7-2 deficit to win its home opener against Elmira on Thursday at Coyer Field by a score of 12-9.

Buffalo State scored six straight goals after being down 7-2 to claim their first lead of the game at the 12:11 mark of the second half. The Soaring Eagles answered with two goals over the next five minutes to reclaim a 9-8 lead. Sophomore Chelsey Fail (Hilton/East Rochester) scored the game tying goal less than a minute later and freshman mid-fielder Meagan Powers (Pearl River/Pearl River) netted the game-winner with 9:30 remaining in the scoreboard.

Frail led Buffalo State with four goals and an assist as the Bengals scored seven goals in the second half to complete the comeback. Annie Tallchief (Perrsburg/Lakeshore) added three goals and an assist to her career totals. Leah Bernal (E. Aurora/Iroquois) and Leslie Perreault (Johnson City/Maine Endwell) each scored two goals in the win.

Buffalo State extended its unbeaten streak to three games with a 16-1 home-victory over Medaille Saturday at Coyer Field.

Buffalo State built a 12-0 lead going into halftime of a game that saw nine different Bengals tally goals. Junior Rachael Galus (Hamburg/Frontier) led all scorersith three goals and one assist. Nadya Chomiak (Elma/Iroquois), Chesley Frail (Hilton/East Rochester), Leslie Perreault (Johnson City/Maine Endwell), Raven Szymanek (Williamsville/Williamsville South) and Annie Tallchief (Perrsburg/Lakeshore) each had two goals in the contest. Meagan Powers (Pearl River/Pearl River) scored a goal and an assist, Nikole Flannery (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) and Leah Bernal (E. Aurora/Iroquois) each added a goal to their career totals.

Buffalo State outshot Medaille 25-5, and registered nine more groundballs than the Mavericks. Freshman goaltender Katie Fels (Williamsville/Williamsville East) improved her record to 3-0 on the season with the win.

Buffalo State will look to get their first SUNYAC win of the season when they host Fredonia next Tuesday on Coyer Field for a 4:00 p.m. start.
