Women’s Lacrosse Posts 3-0 Week
Buffalo State improved to 2-1 in the SUNYAC and 6-1 overall with a 14-13 overtime victory against conference rival Brockport on Tuesday.
Junior Annie Tallchief (Perrsburg/Lakeshore) scored her third goal of the game with 14 seconds left in the first overtime period to put the Bengals ahead for good. The two teams were deadlocked at 8-8 after the first half and 11-11 after regulation to send the game into overtime. Sophomore Leslie Perreault (Johnson City/Maine Endwell) led all Bengal scorers with four goals while Chelsey Frail (Hilton/East Rochester) added two goals and an assist to her career numbers. Leah Bernal (East Aurora/Iroquois) and Meagan Powers (Pearl River/Pearl River) each had two goals in the game and junior Nikole Flannery (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) tallied a goal in the win. Freshman goaltender Katie Fels (Williamsville/Williamsville East) made seven saves in net for the Bengals.

Freshman Leah Bernal (East Aurora/Iroquois) netted three goals and sophomore Chelsey Frail (Hilton/East Rochester) moved into sole position of fourth on the Bengals’ all-time career scoring list with two goals and an assist. Leslie Perreault (Johnson City/Maine Endwell) continued her hot-streak with two goals and an assist. Meagan Powers (Pearl River/Pearl River) added a goal and two assists to her totals and Rachel Galus (Hamburg/Frontier) tallied an assist.
Buffalo State goaltender Katie Fels (Williamsville/Williamsville East) improved her record to 7-1 as well with six stops in the game. Buffalo State out-shot Potsdam 33-11 and committed 11 less turnovers than their opponents.
Buffalo State improved to 8-1 overall on Saturday with a 17-5 win over Cazenovia to close out their 2004 home schedule.
After going down a goal in the first two minutes of the game, Buffalo State went on an 8-0 scoring run to capture the lead for the remainder of the game. Junior Annie Tallchief (Perrsberg/Lakeshore) led all scorers with four goals and two assists on the day. Tallchief also controlled eight of the game’s 22 draws and collected four ground balls. Leslie Perreault (Johnson City/Maine Endwell) added four goals and an assist to bring her season total to 32 points (23g-9a), good enough to place her in ninth on the Bengal’s all-time scoring list. Leah Bernal (E. Aurora, Iroquois) had three goals and an assist and Chelsey Frail (Hilton/East Rochester) tallied a pair of goals and two assists.
Senior defender Andrea Floriano (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) was honored at halftime as the team’s lone senior. Floriano finished her home career with a goal in the second half of the game. Bengal attacker Rachel Galus (Hamburg/Frontier) had two goals and an assist, Meagan Powers (Pearl River/Pearl River) registered a goal and an assist, and Tiffany George (Delevan/Pioneer) had an assist on the day.
Outdoor Track Competes at Slippery Rock
Buffalo State had nine top-eight finishers in a non-team scored meet on Saturday at Slippery Rock University.
Mercedes Roper (Buffalo/City Honors) led the women, placing second in the 100 meter dash and fourth in the 200 meter dash. Jennifer Vacanti (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) finished sixth in the 1500 and Deirdre Blanke (Niskayuna/Colonie) placed fifth in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
Ken Ciolek (Limestone/Bradford Area) paced the men with a second-place finish in the high jump and an eighth place finish in the triple jump. Justin Muise (Kenmore/Kenmore West) garnered a second place finish in the 200 meter dash, Tim Giagios (Rochestein the 400 meter hurdles and Rob Kozlowski (Elma/Iroquois) placed sixth in the hammer throw.
Buffalo State will compete in the SUNYAC Championships at Cortland this weekend.
Softball Goes 3-3 on Weekend
Buffalo State hosted the SUNYAC’s top-team on Friday, and Cortland, ranked No. 7 in the nation, defeated the Bengals, 3-2 and 9-4.
In the first game, Cortland opened the scoring on a solo-homerun by Lara Stone (Windsor/Windsor) to lead off the fourth inning. The Red Dragons manufactured another run later in the inning, and extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning, when Stone singled to drive in Jen Rockwell (Scotia/Scotia). Buffalo State climbed back into the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a solo-homer by Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls), and on an RBI double by Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South). Cortland held on in the seventh inning, however, to claim the 3-2 victory. Stephanie Adamshick (Milton/Marlboro) improved to 14-0 on the mound striking out seven, as she allowed just seven hits and two runs. Stone finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Red Dragons, and Carin Piacente (Putnam Valley/Walter Panas) went 3-for-3 with a double. Sirianni led the Bengals’ bats, going 2-for-4 with the homerun, and Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was also 2-for-4. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) fell to 8-2 on the mound, allowing eight hits and two earned runs.
In the nightcap, Buffalo State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Cortland stormed back in the bottom half with six runs of its own. The Red Dragons added three more runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead. The Bengals closed the gap to 9-4 in the sixth inning, but could not come any closer. Megan Dore (Staatsburg/FD Roosevelt) and Keri Banta (Washingtonville/Washingtonville) were both 2-for-4 with an RBI for Cortland. Rockwell added a triple and three RBI. Ang D’Amboise (Ballston/Lake Shenendehowa) earned the win on the mound, pitching the final four innings, allowing two runs and three hits. Sirianni led the Bengals’ going 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Nicole Willats (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Buffalo State wrapped up its home schedule on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of SUNYAC-foe Oswego, winning the opener 4-0 and taking the second game 6-0.

Tonawanda) earned her ninth win of the season on the mound, scattering five hits in the shutout. Brosius and Sirianni each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Missy Constanza (Hannibal/Hannibal) led the Lakers bats, going 2-for-3. Heather McBride (Mechanicville/Mechanicville) took the loss on the mound allowing eight hits and four runs.

Heidi Rammacher (Angola/Lakeshore) was 3-for-3 for Buffalo State, and Tiffany Ciolek (Limestone/Salamanca) was 2-for-4 with a triple. Nicole Willats (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) broke the Buffalo State career record for sacrifices with 43. Oswego’s Susie Burt (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford) took the loss on the mound despite registering eight strikeouts.

The Bengals dropped the second game by a 5-3 margin. Melissa Balsavage (Depew/Depew) got the start on the mound, but surrendered five runs on four hits in two innings. Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster/Lancaster) pitched the final four innings, allowing no runs and no hits. Heidi Rammacher (Angola/Lakeshore) was 2-for-3 with a double, and Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South) added a double and two RBI.
Buffalo State fell to 14-12 on the season and will travel to the University of Rochester on Tuesday for another non-conference doubleheader.
