FOOTBALL (1-3) – Football Falls at Cortland, 36-14

Cortland (2-2) scored two touchdowns in a 10-second span late in the opening half, as the Red Dragons defeated Buffalo State (1-3) 36-14 on Saturday at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex before a crowd of 3,100.

Cortland opened the scoring on a two yard pass with 5:48 to play in the opening quarter. The Bengals responded to tie the score early in the second stanza, as Curtis Hathcock (Buffalo/Bennett) scored a two-yard touchdown after the Bengals took over on the Cortland 19-yardline when Justin Draper (Cheektowaga/Cleveland Hill) fell on a fumble forced by Bo Sireika (Lackawanna/Lackawanna).

Cortland broke the deadlock with a touchdown on a 14-yard run with 1:16 remaining in the first half, but missed the extra point. On the ensuing kickoff, the Red Dragons recovered the ball on the Bengals 26-yardline, and score on the next play. After a failed conversion, Cortland took a 19-7 lead into the intermission.

Cortland scored the only points of the third quarter on a 32-yard field goal to extend its lead to 22-7. Buffalo State assembled an eight play, 80-yard drive to open the fourth quarter, capped by a Will Bryant (Washington, DC/Bishop Ireton) one-yard plunge, to cut the deficit to eight points.

Buffalo State would not come any closer however, as the Red Dragons would add scores on 51 and 14-yard runs to seal the victory.

Quarterback Mike Mikolaichik (Hilton/Hilton) was 12-for-27 for 163 yards and one interception against his former team. Hathcock carried the ball 25 times for 68 yards and Marc Hoppy (Depew/Depew) had four catches for 47 yards. Hank Pirowski (Lackawanna/Lackawanna) led the defense with 14 tackles, including six solo stops. Sireika made 10 tackles for the Bengals.

Buffalo State will host Brockport for homecoming next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

CROSS COUNTRY – Cross Country Runs Cortland Double Dip Challenge

Buffalo State's men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Cortland Double Dip Challenge on Saturday.

On the men's side, AJ Walsh (Hamburg/Frontier) was the top male finisher in the 8K race, finishing second of 57 runners with a time of 27:08. Matt Kubiak (Lakeview/Frontier) was the top Bengal finisher in the 4K race, placing ninth of 32 runners in 13:52.

Aleksandra Halin (Clarence/Clarence) led the women's team, placing third of 12 runners in the 8K race with a time of 35:02. Jennifer Vacanti (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) led Buffalo State in the 4K, placing 22nd of 51 athletes clocking 17:05.

Buffalo State will compete at the Geneseo Invitational next Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL (8-16/0-4) – Bengals Winless Through First Half of SUNYAC Play

Buffalo State dropped all four of its matches this weekend at Round One of SUNYAC Pool Play at Oswego.

The Bengals opened the conference slate on Friday with a 3-1 loss to Brockport, 30-24, 14-30, 22-30 and 26-20. Krista Wierzbicki (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) recorded 26 assists, 13 digs and six kills. Vicky Manos (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) had 11 kills and 14 digs, and Jen Breier (Grand Island/Grand Island) tallied seven kills, five blocks and four aces in the loss.

In Friday's second match, Fredonia defeated the Bengals in three games, 26-30, 18-30 and 19-30. Manos had nine digs and four aces, and Keri Bumgardner (Babylon/West Babylon) recorded six kills and six blocks.

On Saturday, Buffalo State fell short against Geneseo, 3-1, with scores of 18-30, 31-29, 25-30 and 24-30. Denise Jedynak (Hamburg/Frontier) led the Bengals with 31 digs, and Wierzbicki dished out 24 assists.

The Bengals wrapped up the weekend with a disappointing 3-0 loss to Oswego, 26-30, 29-31 and 22-30. Manos ered 13 kills and 15 digs, and Jedynak had 30 digs.

Buffalo State is now 8-16 overall and 0-4 halfway through the SUNYAC schedule.

Who’s Next?

Buffalo State will finally open its home schedule on Thursday against St. John Fisher.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (4-4-1/1-2) – Bengals Return to .500

Buffalo State went 2-0-1 this week to level its overall record at 4-4-1.

Buffalo State and Daemen played to a 1-1 tie on Tuesday at Coyer Field. The visiting Wildcats got on the scoreboard just 1:08 into the game, but the Bengals would tie the score late in the first half on a goal by Gina Monaco (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) with an assist from Christina Semertzides (Wappinger Falls/Roy C. Ketchum). Neither team would score again, despite numerous chances on both ends of the field. Goalkeeper Jessica Bingerman (Great Valley/Ellicottville) made nine saves in 110 minutes for the Bengals.

Buffalo State earned its first conference win of the season Saturday with a 3-0 victory at SUNYIT. The Bengals got scoring from three different players as Monaco, Lucy Bauda (W. Seneca/Orchard Park) and Rebecca Sommer (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) all found the back of the net. Bauda and Katie Zariczny (Great Valley/Ellicottville) each added assists. Bingerman made five saves for her first collegiate shutout.

Buffalo State produced its highest goal total of the season Sunday, as it defeated Cazenovia, 7-0, to level its record at 4-4-1. Monaco led the attack with three goals, and Semertzides added two goals and an assist. Kim Nogle (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) and Sommer each scored single goals. Amy Drozen (Williamsville/Williamsville East) chipped in three assists.

Buffalo State will return to action on Friday when it hosts Oneonta at 4:00 p.m.

MEN’S SOCCER (1-6-2/0-2) – Bengals Continue to Fall Short

Buffalo State continued its winless skid this week, tying RIT and losing at home against Elmira.

Buffalo State battled to a 1-1 tie Wednesday at RIT. Buffalo State got on the board first in the 38th minute when freshman midfielder Matt Ketchum (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) scored his first goal as a Bengal. The Tigers stormed back to tie the game with nine minutes left in regulation. Neither team would tally another goal despite playing two 10-minute sudden-victory overtime periods. Bengal goaltender Shawn McDonnell (West Seneca/West Seneca East) had a solid game in net recording 11 saves in the tie. Buffalo State was outshot 28-5 in the contest.

Buffalo State fell to 1-6-2 Saturday after losing 2-1 at home against the Elmira Soaring Eagles. With the win, Elmira improved to 3-4 on the year. Bengal forward Brian Miller (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) tied the game at 1-1 on an unassisted goal with eight minutes left in regulation. The Soaring Eagles would score less than two minutes later, however, on a corner kick that beat Bengal goaltender McDonell in the right corner of the net. The Soaring Eagles scored their first goal in the ninth minute of the game. The Bengals outshot the Soaring Eagles 15-9 in the contest.

The Bengals will return to action on Tuesday when they host St. John Fisher on Coyer Field at 4:00 p.m.
