Boorady Recognized for Excellence in Teaching at International Conference

Lynn Boorady, chair and associate professor of fashion and textile technology, was recognized by the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) for her contributions to teaching and service. At ITAA’s annual conference in November, she received the Teaching Excellence Award.

Nominated faculty must document significant and exceptional achievements in the areas of teaching, research, and service for consideration of the award.

Boorady, who joined the Buffalo State faculty in 2010, practices her teaching philosophy—bringing real-world experience into the classroom—by pairing with industry partners on a regular basis. She has worked with Build-A-Bear Workshop, Lori Coulter swimwear, Cotton Incorporated, the Salvation Army, and local hospitals, philanthropies, and small businesses to bring service-learning and industry examples to her students.

“I have been teaching for over 20 years and can honestly say that I still love to come to work every day,” said Boorady. “Over those years, many innovative teaching techniques and collaborations have been accomplished. I still firmly believe that some of the richest teaching happens outside the classroom during industry visits, study abroad opportunities, and casual conversations.”

After receiving the award, Boorady thanked her students and Buffalo State.

“My students’ different viewpoints, culture, passion, and creativity have challenged me to grow in so many different ways,” she added. “I especially thank my colleagues and my institution for supporting my ideas, allowing me to grow even more, and for challenging me to continually do my best.”

ITAA is a professional, educational association composed of scholars, educators, and students in the textile, apparel, and merchandising disciplines in higher education. ITAA promotes the discovery, dissemination, and application of knowledge and is a primary resource for its members in strengthening leadership and service to society.
