Brockport Romps Buffalo State Football in I-90 Bowl, 55-13

BUFFALO, NY— Matt McCormick (Peru/Peru) rushed for 226 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 96 yards and another score as Brockport (5-5) pounded Buffalo State (2-8), 55-13, in the season-ending I-90 Bowl rivalry game today at Coyer Field.

Brockport amassed 519 yards of total offense, while limiting the Bengals to just 236, and outscored Buffalo State 34-0 in the second half.

McCormick surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing plateau, bringing his total to 1,134 for the season. Mike Maciejewski (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) added four catches for 108 yards and two scores. Jake DerCola (Clyde/Clyde-Savannah) was 6 for 7 passing for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Jarrett Woodfork (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) had 10 tackles and an interception, and Dale Buck (Oakfield/Oakfield Alabama) added 10 stops and a fumble recovery.

Buffalo State quarterback Dan Aquilio (Depew/Depew) was 12 of 33 for 153 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Greg Meyer (Lancaster/Lancaster) had six catches for 153 yards and a score. Scott Forster (E. Otto/Catt.-Little Valley) led the Bengals defense with 12 tackles, and Darryl Davis (Lancaster/Lancaster) had nine stops and a forced fumble.

After Buffalo State’s opening drive stalled at midfield, Brockport struck quickly on its first play from scrimmage, when McCormick hit Maciejewski with an 81-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline.

Brockport extended its lead to 14-0 on its second possession, driving 71 yards on 10 plays, capped by a 20-yard touchdown run by McCormick.

Buffalo State got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter after taking over in Brockport territory when Davis the ball from McCormick and Peter Nguyen (Buffalo/South Park) fell on it. The Bengals then drove 40 yards on seven plays, ending with a 2-yard play-action scoring pass from Aquilio to Paul Nieman (Depew/Depew), closing the deficit to 14-6.

Brockport found the end zone again midway through the second quarter after a Woodford interception in Bengals’ territory set up a 22-yard scoring run by Mark Wolfe (Brockport/Brockport) pushed the lead to 21-6.

Buffalo State closed the gap to 21-13 before the intermission, when it mounted a nine-play, 62-yard drive that culminated with an 8-yard pass from Aquilio to Meyer in the left corner of the end zone.

Brockport broke it open early in the second half, after three runs by McCormick that covered 65 yards to open the period, Garet Lynch (Valley Stream/Springfield Gardens) punched it in from 5 yards. After a Golden Eagle interception just three plays later, Brockport extended its lead to 35-13 when McCormick scored his second touchdown of the day, this time from 1 yard.

Brockport added three more touchdowns, a 1-yard pass from DerCola to Maciejewski, and 1-yard run by Gary Bohl (Slingerlands/Guilderland), and a 31-yard pass from DerCola to Mike Smith (Webster/Webster Schroeder) to close out the scoring.
