Brockport Stuns Softball in Opening Game of SUNYACs

CORTLAND, NY—Buffalo State (25-10) jumped out to a 7-0 first-inning lead, but Brockport (28-11) answered with five home runs, including a seventh-inning grand slam to shock the Bengals with a 12-10 victory in the first round of the SUNYAC Championships at Cortland today.

Buffalo State had 13 hits in the game, compared to 12 by Brockport. Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/Frontier) was 2 for 4 for the Bengals with a homerun and three RBIs. Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Jessica Mooney (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster), Jenna Schwartzmeyer (Williamsville/Williamsville South) and Christina Tschari (Williamsville/Clarence) were each 2 for 4.

Fisher started the game for the Bengals and pitched four complete innings, allowing five hits and four runs with six strikeouts. Schwartzmeyer took over with no outs in the fifth, and surrendered eight runs (three earned) on seven hits with one strikeout.

Buffalo State sprinted to a 7-0 advantage in the first inning on five hits and one Brockport error and seemed to be in command. Brockport hit a solo-homer in the fourth to get on the board, but the Bengals responded with a run of its own to regain the seven-run advantage in the bottom of the inning. The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 8-6 with a with a five-run fifth, that included back-to-back-to-back homers to leadoff the inning. The Bengals padded their cushion again, however, scoring runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth, to extend the advantage to 10-6 entering the final inning.

Brockport exploded for six runs in the seventh, capped by a one-out grand slam that put the Golden Eagles ahead for the first time all day. Buffalo State only managed one hit in the bottom of inning and fell two runs short.

Buffalo State will face elimination tomorrow at 9 a.m. against the top-seeded host Cortland.
