Diamond Update: The softball team dropped a pair of games to close out its spring trip, falling 2-0 to the University of Chicago and then 6-4 to No. 8-ranked UW-Whitewater Thursday at the US National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.

Julie Joyce (E. Pembroke/Pembroke), Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) and Nicole Maher (Waterloo/Waterloo) each had singles for Buffalo State’s only three hits against Chicago. Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) was 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs against nationally-ranked Whitewater.

The Bengals returned home Saturday to host Morrisville in the SUNYAC opener and swept the two-game series, winning 6-0 and 5-1. Jenna Frieling (E. Amherst/Williamsville North) threw a no-hitter in the opening game and also contributed at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a triple, double and an RBI.

Buffalo State is 8-4 overall and 2-0 in league play and is slated to host Geneseo in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

Buffalo State track and field saw a school record fall and had a pair of NCAA provisional qualifiers Saturday in its opening meet of the outdoor season against Division I opponents at the University of Maryland Invitational. Kelly Tooley (N. Syracuse/CNS) tied for third in the discus and set a new school standard of 41.85 meters. Willie Hordge (Buffalo/Forestbrook TX) highlighted things on the men’s side, placing second in the 200-meter dash with an NCAA provisional time of 21.78 seconds and was also part of the 4x100-meter relay that was second with a provisional time of 41.90 seconds.

We Want Seven
The women’s lacrosse team will look to tie a school record and extend its winning streak to seven games when the Bengals host Brockport in the SUNYAC opener for both teams Tuesday at 4 p.m.
