Buffalo State College is the highest-ranked four-year college in Western New York, according to Washington Monthly magazine’s 2019 “Best Bang for the Buck Colleges in the Northeast” ratings, which were released Monday, August 26.

Buffalo State ranks 49th out of 363 institutions on the regional Best Bang for the Buck Colleges list, which rates colleges according to how well they help students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.

Additionally, Buffalo State joined the top 100 institutions in the magazine’s master’s universities category, ranking 76th nationally out of 606. Washington Monthly’s overall college rankings rate schools based on their contributions to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating non-wealthy students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship), and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

“It’s wonderful to see Buffalo State is once again acknowledged as a national leader in social mobility, in addition to the outstanding recognition as Western New York’s best value among four-year colleges and universities,” Buffalo State President Katherine Conway-Turner said. “We take tremendous pride in meeting students where they are—no matter their background, academic, or socioeconomic status—and providing support and opportunities to believe in a better future, to be inspired by our accomplished faculty, and to achieve success personally and professionally.”

The Washington Monthly ratings follow a 2018 ranking from CollegeNET that placed Buffalo State in the top 100 nationally, according to the organization’s Social Mobility Index (SMI). Buffalo State ranked 82nd nationally out of 1,380 benchmarked schools in the 2018 SMI.

Buffalo State welcomed roughly 1,700 freshmen to campus this semester. First-year students moved into their residence halls last week. The 2019 fall semester began Monday, August 26.
