Buffalo State Explodes to Sweep New Paltz in Softball Doubleheader

Buffalo State's offense exploded for 36 runs as the Bengals swept New Paltz in a home doubleheader, winning the first game 10-2 and taking the nightcap 26-0.

New Paltz jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener, but Buffalo State responded with two in the third, three in the fourth, and five in the fifth to end the game at 10-2. Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) led the Bengals' bats, going 2-for-3 with a homerun, a double and four RBI. Alyssa Brosius (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) was 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs, and Nicole Willats (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) had a triple at two RBI. Liz Beiter (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) improved to 9-1 on the mound, allowing just five hits and two runs. Colleen Powers (Monsey/Spring Valley) had a double and an RBI to lead the Hawks, and Jessica Schropfer (Glen Oaks/Cardozo) was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

In the second game, Buffalo State tallied 11 runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to the 26-0 victory on 19 hits and seven New Paltz errors in just five innings. Brosius led Buffalo State, going 4-for-4 with four RBI. Sirianni was 3-for-5 with five RBI, and Willats was 2-for-4 with a homerun, a double and four RBI. Three Buffalo State pitchers combined for the one-hit shutout with Melissa Balsavage (Depew/Depew) earning the win.

Buffalo State is now 12-8 overall and 6-2 in SUNYAC play. The Bengals will visit Geneseo on Tuesday for another conference doubleheader. New Paltz falls to 5-16-1 overall and 0-6 in conference, and will visit Russell Sage on Monday.
