Buffalo State Holds Second Annual Peace Conference

Buffalo State College will hold its second annual peace conference for the study of understanding community and peace on Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at Rockwell Hall on the campus at 1300 Elmwood Ave.

“The Relationship Between Peace Initiatives and Community Development” will feature faculty, community and student speakers, as well as a representative from the United Nations, Stadler Trengove, legal officer, office of legal counsel, office of legal affairs, who will speak about “Indicators of Effectiveness in Fostering Community Development Potential Through United Nations Peace Initiatives.”

Assemblymember Sam Hoyt, Associate Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University at Buffalo Dr. Jeannette Ludwig, Professor of History at SUNY College at Brockport Dr. Salahuddin Malik and Director of United Neighborhoods Shakoor Aljuwani will also speak.

The peace conference, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 9 a.m. (registration takes place at 8:30) with a welcome from Dr. Jean Gounard, director of International Student Affairs, and coordinator of this year’s conference.

Imam Fajri Ansari, assistant director of admissions at Buffalo State College, will deliver an invocation, and Dr. Muriel Howard, president of Buffalo State, will deliver opening remarks.

Assemblymember Hoyt will speak on “Why Buffalo Is an International City and How It Can Involve the International Community in Peace,” at 9:30 a.m.

Following, four students who wrote essays on the peace conference theme will read them.

A musical interlude, performed by the Buffalo State Choir, will follow.

Trengove will present his speech at 10:40 a.m. Malik will present her lecture at 11:10 a.m. Question and answer periods will follow both talks.

Four more students will read their essays at 1:25 p.m. after a break for lunch and a 1:15 prayer meeting led by Imam Ansari.

At 2:10 p.m., Ludwig will present her lecture. Aljuwani will follow at 2:40 p.m. Both talks will be followed by question and answer periods.

Trengove, Malik, Ludwig and Aljuwani will give concluding remarks at 3:40.
