Buffalo State Philharmonia presents 'No Calorie Suites'

The Buffalo State Philharmonia, under the direction of Paul Ferington, will presents its first concert of the 2013–2014 season on Tuesday, November 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall.

Titled “No Calorie Suites,” this concert will feature Handel’s Water Music Suite, Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1, Grieg’s Sigurd Jorsalfar Suite, and Saint-Saen’s Suite Algerienne. Guest soloist Christine Davis, principal flutist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, will be featured in Godard’s Suite for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 116.

“Our fall concert will give our musicians and audience a chance to experience the various historical time periods of the ‘suite’ as an instrumental form,” Ferington said. “From the seventeenth to the twenty-first century, the suite as a collection of pieces has been a unique and popular form because of its variety and interest. We also believe our performance of the Camille Saint-Saens Suite Algerienne will be a regional first.”

Formed in the fall of 2009, the Buffalo State Philharmonia is an auditioned college-community orchestra composed of music majors and non-majors, as well as experienced professional and community musicians.
