Buffalo State Wins Men's Basketball Holiday Inn Title
BUFFALO, NYBuffalo State defeated D'Youville 63-51 tonight in the championship game of the Holiday Inn Invitational at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. Medaille edged Hilbert 71-66 in the consolation game.
Buffalo State (6-3) opened this evening's contest with a 20-5 run and never let D'Youville (3-6) closer than seven points down, as the Bengals cruised to a 63-51 victory. Perry Davis (Buffalo/Seneca) recorded his second double-double in as many nights with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Joshua Becker (Hamburg/Frontier) added 15 points and eight boards. Justin Konst (Williamsville/Williamsville East) six points, 12 rebounds and six assists, and Jon Allport-Cohoon (Lockport/Lockport) scored a career-high 10 points. D'Youville was led by Javon Jones' (Harlem/Hillside) 20 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Cooke (Lanham, MD/Albert Einstein) grabbed 10 rebounds for the Spartans.
In the consolation game, Medaille (2-9) trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half, but took its first lead of the game with 5:49 remaining and held on to edge Hilbert (3-8) 71-66. Jason Filipski (Buffalo/Riverside) turned in a game-high 26 points and seven rebounds for the Mavericks in the win. Pierre Bryant (Buffalo/McKinley) added 13 points and nine boards. Sam Gioia (W. Seneca/W. Seneca West) led Hilbert with 17 points and six assists, and Dominic Miller (Niagara Falls/W. Seneca West) chipped in 14 points.
