Buffalo State Wins Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Research Award
Buffalo State College is one of 15 institutions nationwide to win a Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Program from the Merck Company Foundation and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
The Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Program is a national competitive awards program available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Fifteen awards are made annually, with each award providing up to $60,000 over three years for joint use by the biology and chemistry departments at each recipient institution. Buffalo State's award will provide research stipends for up to four undergraduate biology or chemistry majors in interdisciplinary research projects who will begin their programs this summer.
The 10-year, $9 million initiative launched in 2000 as a national competition is funded by The Merck Company Foundation and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Its goals are to:
- enhance undergraduate education through research experiences that emphasize the interrelationship between chemistry and biology,
- encourage students to pursue graduate education in chemistry and life sciences; and,
- foster undergraduate programs and activities that bridge chemistry and biology.
The program is open to qualified institutions in the United States and Puerto Rico that offer an American Chemical Society-approved program in chemistry - a distinction achieved by only 25 percent of undergraduate programs in the U.S.
The Merck Company Foundation is a U.S.-based private, charitable foundation. Established in 1957 by Merck and Co., Inc., it is funded entirely by the company. Key priorities of its mission are advancing biomedical science training and education and improving access to health care worldwide.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science is the world's largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal, "Science." Founded in 1848, the AAAS serves 134,000 members as well as 272 affiliates representing 10 million scientists.
