Buffalo State Wins Women's Basketball Betty Abgott Invitational

BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State defeated Elmira, 59-53, to earn the championship in the Betty Abgott Invitational today at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. D’Youville beat Mt. St. Vincent, 58-43, in the consolation game.

Buffalo State (2-0) trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, but rallied past Elmira (1-1) for a six-point win. The Bengals finally took their first lead of the game with 3:05 remaining, and never trailed again. Darnika Moseley (Liverpool/Liverpool) and Tawan Slaughter (Buffalo/Christian Central) were Buffalo State’s leading scorers with 16 and 15 points respectively. Jacey Brooks (Machias/Franklinville) registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Amanda Benoit (Deerfield/Whitesboro) added seven points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Bridget Catanese and Kourtney Troutman each tallied 11 points for Elmira, and Erin Eaton scored 10.

In the consolation game, D’Youville (1-1) never trailed en route to a 15-point victory over Mt. St. Vincent (0-2). The Spartans were led by Kate Modafferi’s 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Rachel Placito scored 13 points, Tricia Keltz added 10 points, and Tracey Travis grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds for D’Youville. Kaitlin Morch paced Mt. St. Vincent with nine points and 12 rebounds, and Meagan Fitzpatrick chipped in eight points.
