Burchfield-Penney Announces Call for Works for Two Outdoor Artworks on Grounds of New Museum
The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is pleased to announce a competition for works for two outdoor artworks for the site of its new museum building scheduled to open in summer 2008. One site is at the south east corner of the new museum on Elmwood Avenue while the second site is at the entrance to the museum, on Rockwell Road. All artists from Western New York are encouraged to participate in this extraordinary opportunity.
The artworks must be of significant scale and presence and may be a three dimensional presentation or involve various media such as digital technologies, projections and/or landscape elements. The purpose is to “announce” the new museum building as an art museum. The artworks may respond to the architectural forms of the building or the materials or colors used in the building and/or the grounds.
“This is an exceptional opportunity to create art that will not only contribute significantly to the aesthetic of the new Burchfield-Penney, but will be a lasting part of the landscape of the Museum District and the campus of Buffalo State College,” said Ted Pietrzak, director of the Burchfield-Penney.

The new 84,000 square foot Burchfield-Penney, designed by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects, is scheduled to open in the summer of 2008. The two-story building will be the Burchfield-Penney’s first free-standing home and have a major presence on Elmwood Avenue in the heart of Buffalo’s Museum District.
The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is supported in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Erie County. Additional operating support is provided by Buffalo State College, the Elizabeth Elser Doolittle Trust, the James Carey Evans Endowment, the Mary A. H.
