NY Collects Buffalo State
July 9 October 3, 2004
Opening Reception: Friday, July 9 from 7:30 9:30 p.m. (in front of Rockwell Hall)
Presenting works of art created by former students of Buffalo State College, NY Collects Buffalo State will examine the impact that Buffalo State College has had on the art world in general and specifically, the state of the arts in New York. The exhibition will feature artists whose works are in museum, corporate and private collections in New York State.
Buffalo State Collects Charles E. Burchfield
June 26 -October 17, 2004
As a complement to New York Collects Buffalo State, this exhibition illustrates the generosity of those affiliated with Buffalo State College and the museum’s advisory council in helping to build the Burchfield-Penney’s signature Charles E. Burchfield collection.
Seeing (and Reading) between the Lines: A Kenmore West Collaboration
Education Corridor

Student works from Kenmore West High School are the result of an Art-in-Education collaboration between the Burchfield-Penney and Kenmore West that focused on the ways that artists incorporate text into their artwork and the relationship between the two disciplines. The resources for the project included an exhibition of work from the Burchfield-Penney’s collection and two visiting artists in the school including printmaker Barbara Rowe and collage artist Russell Ram.

Celebrating E. B. Green

This exhibition features photo-enlargements of several civic buildings, clubhouses and residences that were designed by noted Buffalo architect E. B. Green (1855-1950) including the Albright Art Gallery, Buffalo Savings Bank, Buffalo Central YMCA and the Garret Club. The images are from an exhibition of Green’s architecture presented at the Burchfield-Penney in 1997. The display is co-sponsored by the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier.
Poetic Fashions

Poetic Fashions is an exhibition of wearable artworks by 8th grade students of English teacher Suzanne Diffine from Frederick Law Olmsted School #56. Assisted by poet Sherry Robbins from Just Buffalo Literary Center and textile artist Ginny Lohr, the students created a wide range of colorful garments displaying the students’ poems based on issues of disguise, change and fear. Poetry-garments created by the children at Mt. Ararat will be added to the display over the summer. The Joy Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Call (716) 885-7756 for information.

Burchfield-Penney Collects Buffalo State is an extension of the exhibition New York Collects Buffalo State at the Burchfield-Penney. The exhibition at the M&T Center includes work by current and retired Buffalo State faculty artists whose works are in the Burchfield-Penney’s collection. The M&T Center is open to the public. Guided tours of the exhibition are offered every Tuesday at noon; call (716)878-6020 to confirm.
Frank Lloyd Wright: (Not) Forgotten Views

These photographs of Wright's Martin House in Buffalo, taken in 1959 by Victor Shanchuk Jr., are rare documentthe complex. They were exhibited with the Burchfield-Penney’s exhibition Frank Lloyd Wright: Windows of the Darwin D. Martin House. Shanchuk, a graduate of Buffalo State College and member of the Burchfield-Penney’s Council, has photographed Buffalo architecture for over 40 years.
Burchfield Reproductions at Roswell Park
Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Elm & Carton Streets, Buffalo, N.Y.
Members of the Roswell Park Alliance Art Committee made possible the permanent installation of seven reproductions of Charles E. Burchfield paintings. Watercolors of the four seasons from all periods in Burchfield’s career now fill the lobby in front of the radiology department which is adjacent to elevators.

The Roycroft Legacy
The Roycroft Legacy is a fascinating exhibition of late 19th and early 20th century furniture, domestic objects, and publications by Roycroft artisans, primarily donated by Charles Rand Penney.
Charles E. Burchfield's Studio
This authentic recreation of a corner of Burchfield's Gardenville, New York, studio presents many of the artist's tools and favorite inspirational objects, as well as the unpretentious furniture that equipped his comfortable work site. Reflecting the studio's appearance in the mid-1960s, this vignette reveals the humble environment in which the artist worked.
The Metcalfe Rooms
Second Floor, Rockwell Hall
The Metcalfe House, designed in 1882 by the well-known New York City firm McKim, Mead & White, stood on the corner of North Street and Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, NY until 1980. Preservationists were able to only save parts of the structure from demolition. The dining room and library are now housed in Rockwell Hall. Rosen Endowment, Craft Art Western New York 2004 is the Burchfield-Penney Art Center’s ninth biennial exhibition devoted to the celebration of works in clay, fiber, glass, metal and wood by past or current residents of Western New York State (Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming counties). This year’s juror is Mark Leach, deputy director of the Mint Museums and founding director of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, both in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Art on the Hyphen: Cuban-American Artists of Western New York State

Art on the Hyphen: Cuban-American Artists of Western New York State is a presentation of works by Cuban-American artists currently working in Western New York. As "hyphenated" Americans, these artists explore, simultaneously, both Cuban and American culture. The exhibition will provide an artistic context for them within the history of the art of Cuba and the United States in the 21st century. Featured artists include Alberto Rey, Nestor Zarragoitia, George Campos, Christian Campos, Jorge Guitart, Errol Daniels, Agustin Rolando Rojas and Alonso (Fidel Hernandez).
