Burchfield-Penney Appoints Chief Operating Officer
Buffalo State College and the Burchfield-Penney Art Center are pleased to announce the appointment of David M. Tanner as chief operating officer for the museum. In preparation for the Burchfield-Penney’s move into its new facility in the fall of 2008, Mr. Tanner will bring expertise in facility management, finance and human resources to the organization.
Mr. Tanner was associate director, administration at the Indiana University Art Museum in Bloomington, Indiana where he was responsible for managing all budget and finance functions, human resources, public relations and marketing and visitor services. He is past executive director for the Association of Midwest Museums in St. Louis, MO, executive director of the Washington County History Society in West Bend, WI and executive director of the Peoria Historical Society in Peoria, IL. Mr. Tanner earned his BA in English, history and paralegal studies and a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in museum administration from SIUC, Carbondale, IL. In 2007, he received an honorable mention from the American Association of Museums for the case study “Innovation and Teamwork: A Modest Ticketing Project Yields Accurate Attendance Figures” based on a project undertaken at the IU Art Museum.

The new 84,000 square foot Burchfield-Penney, designed by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2008. The two-story building will be the Burchfield-Penney’s first free-standing home and have a major presence on Elmwood Avenue in the heart of Buffalo’s Museum District.
The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is supported in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Erie County. Additional operating support is provided by Buffalo State College, the Elizabeth Elser Doolittle Trust, the James Carey Evans Endowment, the Mary A. H.
