Burchfield-Penney Art Center Exhibits Four Decades of Western New York Art

Share
From July 20 through September 15, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center will present the first in a series of exhibitions from the collection reaffirming its commitment to the artists of our region as it presents A Second Look: Selections from Four Decades of Western New York Artists. A total of 46 established and emerging artists come together in an exhibition that tracks stylistic and cultural development of the 20th century speaking strongly to the issues of post-industrialism.

"The works are meant to provoke us and engage us in self-exploration and psychological inquiry," states Joan Vita Marotta, curator of public programs for the Burchfield-Penney. "They continue to act as vehicles through which we can come to terms with gender roles, sexuality and the tormented side of the human condition."

The principal 20th century art movements represented are Realism, Abstraction, Expressionism, and Conceptualism. But beyond art history?s labels and technology are the voices of responsibility these artists share.

Environmental abuses and concerns are the subjects of works by Christy Rupp, John Pfahl, Robert Hirsch, and Charles Agel; political intolerance and human rights indignities are referenced by Alberto Rey, Endi Poskovic, Juan Carlos Perdiguero and Patricia Carter. Many of the pieces challenge our conventions and orthodoxies of what art should be, such as the works of Les Krims, Cindy Sherman, Paul Sharits, Robert Longo and Charles Clough.

Complimenting the exhibition is a selection of experimental and narrative videos with similar themes by Andrew Deutsch, John Toth, Jody Lafond, Paul Sharits and Robert Longo.

The Burchfield-Penney Art Center?s commitment to collecting and exhibiting the works of Western New York artists was established as part of the Center?s mission in 1966. The generosity of patrons and artists, together with corporate and government support, has enabled the Burchfield-Penney to amass a preeminent collection of paintings, sculpture and works on paper spanning more than a century. Contemporary works from the last four decades are celebrated in this special exhibition.
