Capital Tops Women's Basketball in Betty Abgott Final
BUFFALO, NY—Capital (2-0) used and 18-2 run in the second half to pull past Buffalo State (1-1) and claim a 60-46 victory in the championship game of the Betty Abgott Invitational today at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. The College of New Jersey (1-1) defeated Cazenovia (0-2), 68-38, in the consolation game.
Capital dominated Buffalo State inside, outrebounding the Bengals 49-30 and outscoring them 30-7 in the paint. The Crusaders led 22-21 at halftime, but put the game away in the second half. Sara Heitkamp (Ft. Recovery, OH/Ft. Recovery) led the Crusaders with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Kati Todd (South Milford, IN/Prairie Heights) added 11 points for Capital. Darnika Moseley (Liverpool/Liverpool) paced Buffalo State with 15 points, including hitting 13 of 15 free throws. Toya Parks (Brooklyn/MLK) added 13 points and three steals.
In the consolation game, the College of New Jersey got out to a slow start, trailing 11-10 in the early going, but battled to a 38-23 halftime lead and cruised to victory. Tiara Simpkins (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) led the Lions with 13 points and six steals. Megan Hueter (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) added 11 points, and Erin Frank (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) had 10 points and eight rebounds. Ashley Lewis (Whitesboro/Whitesboro) paced Cazenovia with 10 points and five rebounds. Ashley Agresta (Amsterdam/Galaxy) scored eight points for the Wildcats.
