College Establishes First Annual Students Awards for Diversity

The Buffalo State College President's Council on Equity and Campus Diversity honored faculty and staff at a recognition ceremony on Apr. 8 in the Burchfield-Penney Art Center in Rockwell Hall on the campus.

Winners of the first annual "Students' Awards for the Promotion of Respect for Diversity and Individual Differences" were nominated by students for their strong commitment to diversity and making special efforts to increase respect for diversity and individual differences through classroom discussions, curricular experiences, co-curricular activities, projects, discussions and special mentorships.

Those honored are:

Felix Armfeld, associate professor of history and social studies education, who was nominated by social studies education student Matthew George;

Christopher Aviles, associate professor of social work, who was nominated by social work student Candy Frye;

Albert Bitterman, lecturer of design, who was nominated by interior design student Kierstin A. Thorson-Smith;

Stephen Burgeson, lecturer of hospitality and tourism, who was nominated by hospitality and tourism student Jasmine Gates;

Kevin Clarke, lecturer of sociology, who was nominated by anthropology student Nadia Grabiner, health and wellness student Laurence Ecotiere and sociology student Samantha Malec;

Gloria Eastman, assistant professor of English, who was nominated by English education student Melissa D. Rios;

Andrea Guiati, professor of modern and classical languages and coordinator of the All College Honors Program, who was nominated by interior design student Jessica Stanford;

Carol Patitu, associate professor of educational foundations, who was nominated by stuent personnel administration student Tamara McMillan; and,

Allen Yasgur, lecturer of social work, who was nominated by social work student Candy Frye.
