Buffalo State will confer degrees on more than 1,960 undergraduate and 630 graduate students during its 140th Commencement celebration, Saturday, May 12, in the Sports Arena.

President Aaron Podolefsky will welcome degree candidates and guests at the morning (10:00 a.m.) and afternoon (2:00 p.m.) baccalaureate ceremonies and the evening (6:00 p.m.) master’s hooding and C.A.S. ceremony.

The following graduates of the Class of 2012 will be honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence in recognition of their academic and extracurricular achievements, leadership, and service: Devon A. Cozad, Chanele R. Haynes, Gabriela Moreno, Morgan P. Morningstar, Carlos F. Cisneros Vilchis, and James L. Wangelin (undergraduate students) and Kaitlyn M. Beachner (graduate student). Beachner will also receive the President’s Distinguished Service Award.

Moreno will address the audiences at the morning and afternoon ceremonies as the recipient of the President’s Medal for Outstanding Undergraduate Student. Katie M. Sclafani will deliver an address at the evening ceremony as the recipient of the President’s Medal for Outstanding Graduate Student.

State University of New York honorary degrees will be presented to Carolyn B. Lamm, ’70, partner with White & Case LLP and former president of the American Bar Association (ABA), and David Karpeles, founder and chief executive officer of the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museums. Lamm will deliver the commencement address at the morning and afternoon ceremonies.

In addition, the President’s Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Linda A. Dobmeier, ’71, vice president of Dobmeier Janitor Supply Inc. and Buffalo State College Council member, and Distinguished Alumnus Awards will be granted to Thomas K. Lytle, ’82, former vice president of promotions at Island Def Jam Music Group, and Crystal Davis Peoples-Stokes, ’74, ’02, New York State Assemblywoman, 141st District. Thomas M. Tran, ’04, a touring stand-up comedian, writer, producer, and actor, will receive the Young Alumnus Achievement Award. Peoples-Stokes will deliver the commencement address at the evening ceremony.

Individual profiles of commencement award winners will appear in the Daily Bulletin beginning May 8.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates and join them in this special day by marching in the academic procession or by serving as a volunteer. Volunteers are still needed for the 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. ceremonies. More information is available online.
