The numbers say it all: student success increased from 67 percent to 85 percent over four semesters and cost to the college was almost halved, thanks to a carefully planned redesign of economics’ introductory course, ECO101.

Skeptical? Then plan to attend a one-day conference sponsored by the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT) and Buffalo State, “Increasing Student Success in Social Science.” Download agenda (PDF).

President Aaron Podolefsky will give welcoming remarks, and William Ganley, professor of economics and finance and an NCAT redesign scholar, is among the presenters. The conference will be held Monday, April 18, from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union Social Hall.

“We’re delighted to announce that Dr. Ponton and Dr. Severson have agreed to fund the conference cost for up to 15 Buffalo State faculty members,” said Karen O’Quin, associate dean of the School of Natural and Social Sciences. Some funded slots are still available. Please contact Cara Angie (878-3841) in the Professional Development Office, which is coordinating registration for Buffalo State faculty.

This seminar, one of several NCAT seminars held this year around the United States, will include a special focus on the effective use of undergraduate learning assistants. After Podolefsky speaks, Carolyn Jarmon, vice president of NCAT, will describe the characteristics of NCAT course redesigns in the social sciences, and how those redesigns can be applied to other disciplines. Megan Bradly, associate professor of psychology at Frostburg State University and an NCAT redesign scholar, is also presenting.

Ganley has said that professors who master technology and contemporary higher education trends are in the best position to ensure that changes in higher education promote scholarship for both professors and students. “You can’t turn time back,” he said. The redesign of ECO 101 freed faculty members to teach upper-level and graduate courses.

The seminar will also include discussions of common obstacles and an interactive wrap-up session.
