December Events at a Glance

Buffalo State students may have an eye on the upcoming finals and the ensuing winter break, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of recreational, intellectual, and holiday-themed activity on campus this month to enjoy as well.

Need to take care of some holiday shopping? Stop by the Student Art Sale. Need a laugh to relieve the stress of the holidays? Check out the All You Can Laugh Funffet produced by television and film arts students.

Also, musical performances and celebrations of art and food abound this month. Most events are open to the public.

November 30–December 2
Holiday Open Studios and Galleries

The Burchfield Penney Art Center is partnering with Artists in Buffalo for the Holiday Open Studios and Galleries event on November 30 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., and December 1 and 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. More than 30 Western New York artists will be present in the lobby and reception areas of the Burchfield Penney as part of the citywide event. December 1
All You Can Laugh Funffet

Join television and film arts students for a sketch comedy show at 8:00 p.m. in the Donald Savage Theater and Communication Building's Flexible Theater. Produced in the vein of Saturday Night Live, this show consists of a variety of comedic sketches from rehearsed pieces to a multitude of live sketches. All cast members have a background in entertainment, ranging from stage plays to student films to improvisation comedy shows. Free and open to the public. allyoucanlaughfunffet13@gmail.com.

Horace Mann Graduate Research Symposium
This annual symposium provides an opportunity for graduate-level teacher candidates in the Exceptional Education Department to showcase research projects focusing on academic and behavioral outcomes for a wide range of children with disabilities. The symposium runs from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Bulger Communication Center and is free and open to the public.

December 2
Gallery Talk

Join Burchfield Penney Art Center docents in an in-depth gallery conversation of Charles E. Burchfield’s Solitude from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. in the Anthony J. Sisti Gallery. There will be five gallery talks during the run of the exhibit Charles Burchfield: In His Own Words.

December 2 and December 5
Chamber Recital
Join the Buffalo State Chamber Ensembles for two evenings of music, Sunday, December 2, at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday, December 5, at 7:30 p.m., in the Louis P. Ciminelli Recital Hall, located on the third floor of Rockwell Hall. Ensembles include the Buffalo State Saxophone Quartet, Clarinet Choir, Flute Trio, Brass Quintet, and String Quartet. Over the two concerts, they will play music from a broad spectrum of styles by composers as various as Mozart, Villa-Lobos, Beethoven, Lennon-McCartney, Nelhybel, Bach, and Jobim. December 4
Choral Holiday Spectacular
Various Buffalo State choral groups will celebrate the upcoming holidays with festive songs in a 7:30 p.m. concert in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. Part of the Faculty and Friends Series, the groups are performing under the direction of Victoria Furby, assistant professor of music, and John Fleischman, lecturer of music. Tickets are $10. December 5–6
16th Annual Student Art Sale
Discover a world of handcrafted items perfect for holiday gifts or to grace your home and office. For the 16th annual Student Sale, held in the Czurles-Nelson Gallery, Upton Hall, students from the Art Education, Design, and Fine Arts departments are selling a multitude of items including jewelry, pottery, paintings, photographs, and prints. Hours: Wednesday, December 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and continues Thursday, December 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Carol Townsend, associate professor of design, is coordinating the sale. Campus House Wine and Cheese Tasting
Campus House, a "teaching laboratory" for hospitality students and social club for the Buffalo State community, celebrates its 10th anniversary with a wine and cheese tasting from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Open to all Buffalo State faculty and staff. Admission is $10. (716) 878-3300.
 

 

December 7
Museum Store Lunch and Shopping Event
Local Jewelers will demonstrate how they create their unique jewelry from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center Museum Store. The jewelry artists include Roseanna Cappellino, who uses polymer clay to create her jewelry, wall art, and housewares; Anne Bliss who makes unique bracelets, necklaces and earrings from freshwater pearls and semi-precious stones; and Donna Sturges, who has developed a signature line of enamel jewelry and accessories. December 8
Elska, Children’s Performance
With a blend of theater, storytelling, and musical performance, Elska provides a musical tour of her arctic home located off the coast of Iceland. In this 11:00 a.m. performance in the Burchfield Penney Art Center Auditorium, Elska will introduce her audience to the island’s wonderful inhabitants, including a pensive winter bear and mysterious artic fox. December 13
Buffalo Night at the Museum Store
From 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., visitors have the chance to meet area artists and purchase holiday gifts during a special evening at the Museum Store inside the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Mark Donnelly, artist and award-winning photographer, will sign copies of his latest book, Statuesque Buffalo, which highlights the many and varied statues of the Buffalo area. Featured artists at the free event include Bruce Verbeck, Brian Nesline, Monika Toney, and Eugene Hegedus. Food will be available for purchase from the Burchfield Penney Café. (716) 878-6011.


December 16
Shawn Colvin

Three-time Grammy Award-winner, best known for her hit single “Sunny Came Home,” performs a solo acoustic show at 8:00 p.m. as part of the Great Performers Series in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. The beauty and intimacy of Colvin’s performances showcase her inimitable voice and matchless guitar stylings, and her songs are slow-release works of craft and catharsis that become treasured, lifetime companions for their listeners. Tickets are $27 for Buffalo State faculty and staff, and senior citizens. General admission tickets are $35 in the lower tier and $30 in the upper tier. Strengths Quest: Go Put Your Strengths to Work Part 1

Research data show that most people do not come close to making full use of their assets at work. In fact, only 17 percent of the workforce believes they use all of their strengths on the job. The “Go Put Your Strengths to Work” free workshop for Buffalo State faculty and staff, aims to change that through a six-step experience that will reveal the hidden dimensions of your strengths.
