Edwards Perfect, Men’s Track & Field Narrowly Misses NYSCTC Championship
CANTON, NY— Latoya D. Edwards (Brooklyn/ Clara Barton) was dominant again for the women, running a perfect meet as the Bengals men and women each posted school-best finishes at the New York State College Track & Field Conference (NYSCTC) Championships today at St. Lawrence University and the Bengals men missed a share of the State title by 0.5 points. The men placed second of 15 teams with 127 points, just behind St. Lawrence (127.5). The women finished third, also a school best.
Edwards won three individual titles and ran a leg of a championship relay. She set a pair of individual school records, winning the 200 (25.51) and 500-meter runs (1:19.30). She also won the 55-meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.26 seconds, and teamed with Katya Marin (Mt. Vernon/ Mt. Vernon), Taniqua Hollingsworth (Buffalo/ East) and Anika Niles (Brooklyn/ Samuel J. Tilden) to win the 4x200-meter relay with a new school and State record time of 1:45.23. Marin, Hollingsworth and Niles also ran with Suzan Spence (Brooklyn/ Canarsie) to place second in the 4x400-meter relay (4:04.84).
Lavonne Barfield (Rochester/ Wilson Magnet) captured a State title in the long jump, leaping 5.33 meters. Sharesa Baldwin (Brooklyn/ Clara Barton) earned third in the triple jump, covering 11.17 meters.
For the men, Volter Dalzon (Pt. Chester/ Stepinac) and Keith Henry (Galveston, TX/ Ball) finished first (22.48) and second (22.48) respectively in the 200-meter dash, separated by just .004 seconds. Dalzon and Henry also teamed with Ray Peoples (Buffalo/ Cleveland Hill) and Xavier Mateen (New Rochelle/ New Rochelle) to set a new school record, winning the 4x200-meter relay in 1:30.60. Dalzon, Henry and Mateen joined forces again to win the 4x400-meter relay (3:23.84) along with Maurice Little (Newburgh/ Newburgh). Mario Hicks (Corning/ Corning West) won the crown in the 55-meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional time of 7.60 seconds, and was third in the 55-meter dash (6.62). Willie Jones (Cheektowaga/ Amherst) claimed the title in the high jump, clearing 1.97 meters. Ali Abdul-Matin (Troy/ Troy) added a second-place showing in the triple jump at 13.90 meters. Tim Diegelman (Clarence/ Clarence) and Ray Shadowens (Troup, TX/ Arp) placed second (3,266) and third (3,216) respectively in the pentathlon.
