Empty Bowls Project Celebrates 10 Years

Join Buffalo State art education students in alleviating hunger in Western New York by taking part in the tenth annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on Sunday, May 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

Empty Bowls is a project of the student chapter of the Art Education Association at Buffalo State, and its co-chairs this year are Sara Qureshi and Kelsie Tangelder, both art education majors.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to bring the relevance of art into their art education classrooms,” said John Siskar, director of the Center for Excellence in Urban and Rural Education and a long-time champion of the Empty Bowls project. Funds raised benefit the Western New York Food Bank and the Friends of the Night People.

A thousand hand-made bowls will be on sale, most for five to 15 dollars. The bowls were made by students, community groups, and artists from the greater Western New York area. Every purchase entitles the buyer to a simple meal of soup and bread donated by area restaurants.

Guests will be able to enjoy half-price admission to the Burchfield Penney.
