The Speech-Language Pathology Department hosts the sixth annual Thielman Speaker Series on Saturday, April 30. This year’s presentation, “Stuttering Therapy: Coloring Outside the Lines,” features four sessions presented by Gary J. Rentschler (pictured), director of the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic in the Speech-Language Pathology Department at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Rentschler, a former Western New Yorker, is a board-recognized specialist in fluency disorders and has been recognized as Speech Pathologist of the Year by the National Stuttering Association. His work focuses on the role of emotional and psychosocial factors in perpetuating stuttering. He is currently completing a book, Here’s How to Do Stuttering Therapy.

The presentation begins with a continental breakfast and opening remarks at 8:30 a.m. Rentschler will present four sessions over the course of the day: A treatment Model for Stuttering; Treating the Speech Aspects of Stuttering; and Managing the Affective and Emotional Components of Stuttering. A fourth session will discuss activities for therapy.

“I have worked with Dr. Rentschler,” said Christopher Heximer, “and he is one of the leaders in our field.” Heximer, also an expert on stuttering, is a clinic supervisor for Buffalo State’s Speech Language Hearing clinic, which provides clinical experience to students in the college’s graduate speech-language pathology programs.
