Friday, February 2 at 8:00 p.m.
Concert: Matthew Slotkin, guitarist
Having received acclaim as a performer, teacher, and scholar, Matthew Slotkin is one of the most prominent young guitarists in the United States. Appearing in leading venues throughout North America and Europe, he has achieved success in solo performance, chamber music, and as a soloist with orchestra. With a unique commitment to both the composition and promulgation of new works for the guitar, as well as to meticulous historical performance practice, Slotkin ranks among a singular brand of innovative and engaging artists.

Concert: Nathan Fischer, guitar and Cristina Ballatori, flute
Nathan Fischer has built a unique career as a performer, teacher, and an entrepreneur. Currently, Nathan is on faculty with the State University of New York in Fredonia and Nazareth College, and is the President of the International Guitar Institute.

Concert: Michael Calhoun, flutist
Buffalo-based composer/flutist Michael Colquhoun is heading to the University of Minnesota at Duluth for a three-day residency on February 7, 8 and 9. The residency will feature a master class and two recitals. To celebrate he will perform a send-off recital at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center on Sunday, February 4 at 2:00 p.m. This recital will feature works by Colquhoun for flute alone, flute with electronics, flute and piano, flute and claves and flute and viola. There will be a mix of older works, newer works and two world premiers. Assisting musicians include Persis Vehar, Leslie Salathe and Robert Accurso.This recital is also a preview of Colquhoun’s next CD currently in production. This CD, entitled “Jar of Stones”, will be released in spring 2007. Free with museum admission.

Opening Reception: The Heart Gallery of Western New York
The Heart Gallery of Western New York, a portrait exhibition of local foster care children awaiting adoption, is designed to touch people’s hearts with compelling portraits of foster care kids in our own community who need supportive, compassionate people – people who are willing to open their hearts and homes to these children. Happy Hour featuring music by Dr. Jazz and the Jazzbugs
Cost: $10; free for members.
The Jazzbugs play mostly hot jazz from the Vaudeville era. This is not Dixieland, but a smoother style popular in the 1920s and 30s. Led by Brian “Dr. Jazz” Bauer, with Ed Wood and Willie Wilson.

Poetry Reading: Johanna Fisher and Mark Hammer
Johanna Fisher has published Join the Conversation (2001), and has another book soon to appear. She teaches in the Buffalo State College English Department. Mark Hammer has published several chapbooks including Iris (1993) and also teaches in the Buffalo State College English Department.
Family Workshop: Cartooning with Tom Holt
Relating to Caustic Ink: The Political Cartoons of Tom Toles, children will create Sunday funnies style cartoons. They will learn techniques in stylizing characters and formal elements of comic creating.
The workshop is free of charge and suitable for children age 8 years and over (with accompanying adult); space is limited. Call 878-3550 for information and reservations (required).

Dr. Bryan Boyce on piano featuring works by Kevin McGregor Salfen, Carmen Jude Aquila and Chad Martin.
Sunday, February 18 at 2:00 p.m.
Lecture by Dr. David Lampe and Dr. Andrew Nicholls
Lampe, professor emeritus, Buffalo State College and Nichols, professor of history, Buffalo State College, both of whom wrote essays for the Tom Toles catalog, will discuss the history of political cartooning.

The new 75,000 square foot Burchfield-Penney, designed by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects, is scheduled to open in the spring of 2008. The two-story building will be the Burchfield-Penney’s first free-standing home and have a major presence on Elmwood Avenue in the heart of Buffalo’s Museum District.
