Fine Arts Chair Kicks Off 'Artists on the Road' Series
Philip Ogle, professor and chair of the Fine Arts Department, finds that travel sheds new light on places and events while also providing an opportunity to meet interesting people and share experiences.
On Thursday, October 8, at 12:15 p.m. in Upton Hall 230, Ogle will discuss how travel has influenced his life for an “Artists on the Road: Travel as Source of Inspiration” presentation. The event marks the first of three discussions scheduled for the fall 2015 speaker series, which is co-sponsored by the Design Department and the International and Exchange Programs Office. All presentations in the series take place in Upton Hall 230 at 12:15 p.m. and are free and open to the public.
The public is also invited to attend a closing reception for the Fine Arts Faculty Exhibition, Thursday, October 8, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Upton Hall's Czurles-Nelson Gallery.
Ogle’s presentation, “From the Old World to the New: Spain to the Yucatan,” features a recent trip to Spain where he visited Seville, Cordoba, and Granada. He will contrast that experience with several trips to Mexico that included the Yucatan, Chiapas, and Belize.
Prior to coming to Buffalo State in 2010, Ogle served as the chair of the Fine Arts Department at the College of Visual Art in St. Paul, Minnesota, and he has exhibited large-scale installation, sculptural works at the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
His installation work is currently displayed in various public and private collections, including the University of Northern Iowa Library. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Bush Fellowship, Emily Rothschild Award, Henry Walters European Fellowship, Ethel Van Derlip Award, along with fellowship and faculty development grants. Additionally, he has taught drawing, encaustics, and fresco at workshops in Italy.
Tara Nahabetian, associate professor of design, will continue the “Artists on the Road” series on October 29 with “Taking Flight: Finding Adventure in the Unknown,” Nahabetian will discuss how traveling to different parts of the world has affected her artwork and her life in general.
The last presenter for the fall semester will be Yahaira Zapata, a communication design student, with “The Color of Life: Chromatic Profusion in Turkey” on November 19.
