Football Falls to Salisbury, 40-6

BUFFALO, NY—Salisbury (6-0/3-0), ranked 19th in the nation according to D3Football.com, remained unbeaten today as it capitalized on big plays to defeat host Buffalo State (1-5/1-2) 40-6.

Salisbury opened the scoring with 6:47 remaining in the opening quarter when Joseph Early snuck through to block a Buffalo State punt, and Jacquis McCray recovered the ball in the end zone for the score. The Sea Gulls struck again on the first play of their next possession when Chris Newton reeled in a 72-yard pass from Travis Peters. Brock Boland booted his first of three field goals, from 37 yards out, to complete the first quarter scoring, extending the Salisbury lead to 17-0.

Buffalo State assembled a 13-play, 87-yard drive on its next possession, capped off by a Mike Mikolaichik one-yard touchdown scramble. The Bengals missed to point after try, making the deficit 17-6. Later in the second quarter, Salisbury got on the scoreboard again when defensive end Zach Armiger sacked Mikolaichik in his own end zone, making the score 19-6 with 4:06 remaining in the half. Boland would extend the Sea Gulls lead to 22-6 with a 22-yard field goal with just four seconds remaining in the half.

The only score of the third quarter came at the end of a lengthy, nine play, 86-yard drive by Salisbury, culminated by a four-yard quarterback keeper by Dustin Johnson. Johnson connected with Alfred Little to complete the successful two-point conversion and extend the lead to 30-6.

Salisbury found the end zone for the final time at 11:11 of the fourth quarter when Byron Westbrook intercepted a Mikolaichik pass and took in back 80 yards for the score. Boland added a final field goal from 27 yards to complete the scoring with 7:51 to play.

Salisbury rushed for 226 yards for the game, led by Leroy Satchell‘s 76 on 13 carries. Peters finished with 66 rushing yards and was 3-for-14 in the air for 104 yards and two interceptions. Chris Barr led the Sea Gulls defense with eight tackles, including seven solo stops. Armiger registered six solo stops and had a game-high three sacks.

For Buffalo State, Mikolaichik was 15-for-40 for 165 yards and had two interceptions. James Perkins carried the ball 16 times for 52 yards. Hank Pirowski led the Bengals‘ defense with 11 tackles, including two for a loss. Perry Taglienti made 10 tackles and had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Mike Potter had two interceptions for the Bengals.
