Football Season Ends With Loss at Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY—Bob Darnley was 18-of-28 for 291 yards and three passing touchdowns and one on the ground, as Brockport (6-4/3-2) defeated Buffalo State, 42-21, in an Atlantic Central Football Conference game, today at Special Olympics Stadium. Buffalo State finishes the season 4-6 overall and 2-3 in its first year as a member of the ACFC.

Brockport opened the scoring midway through the opening quarter with a seven-play, 53-yard touchdown drive, capped by a six-yard touchdown pass from Bob Darnley to Mike Mahoney.

Buffalo State evened the score at 7-7 at 13:38 of the second quarter after taking over in Golden Eagle territory following an interception by Mike Potter. The Bengals drove 31 yards on eight plays and scored on a two-yard run by James Perkins.

Brockport’s Brian Wise returned the ensuing kickoff 76 yards to the Bengals’ 12-yard line. The Golden Eagles pulled back into the lead two plays later on a 12-yard run by Dan Lopez. The extra point gave Brockport a 14-7 advantage.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 21-7 with 6:18 to play in the opening half, assembling a 10-play, 85 yard touchdown drive. The march culminated with a 12-yard scoring reception by Mike Calderon from Darnley.

Buffalo State clawed its way back into the game just 1:30 later, when Jason Brown reeled in a 21-yard catch and run for his first collegiate touchdown. The score completed a four-play drive that covered 59 yards.

The Bengals pulled even at 21-21 with just 48 seconds to play in the opening half, with a seven-play, 80-yard scoring drive, following a Mike Haynes interception in the end zone. Quarterback Mike Mikolaichik scored his seventh rushing touchdown with a seven-yard keeper.

Brockport reclaimed the lead, 28-21, on the opening possession of the second half. Wise scored a four-yard touchdown, completing a seven-play, 67-yard drive.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 35-21 with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter. Kevin Beaumont caught a 26 yard touchdown pass from Darley. The score came at the end of a six-play, 54-yard drive that included a conversion on a third-and-15 with a 34-yard pass from Darnley to Mahoney.

Brockport closed out the scoring with 53 seconds to play after a 13-play, 91-yard drive that ate up 6:17. Darley scored the touchdown on a one-yard quarterback keeper.

Lopez finished with exactly 100 yards on 16 carries. Mahoney had four catches for 66 yards. Joe Toombs, Chris Beh and John Walther each made 10 tackles to lead Brockport.

Mikolaichik finished 18-of-40 for 234 yards. Jonathan Allen was the leading receiver with eight catches for 108 yards. Perkins carried the ball 22 times for 98 yards and a score. Perry Taglienti led the Bengals’ defense with 13 tackles, bringing his season total to 109. Potter added 11 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery, and Michael Holbok registered a pair of sacks.

“I’m just proud of our kids,” said Buffalo State Head Coach Paul Shaffner. “Despite today’s result, we continued to make steps in the right direction. I am especially proud of our senior class that provided outstanding leadership all season. They played a major role in helping to lay the first layer of the new foundation of Buffalo State Football.”
