Four Bengals Selected to Compete at NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships
INDIANAPOLIS--The NCAA announced its selections for the Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships today, and Buffalo State's Willie Hordge (Buffalo/Forestbrook TX), Toya Edwards (Brooklyn/Clara Barton), LaVonne Barfield (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) and Tenisha Jones (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) will all compete at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh later this week.
Hordge, already an indoor All-American earlier this year, will compete in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. The junior health and wellness major enters the meet ranked fourth in the 200 (21.29) and is sixth in the 100 (10.56). The 100 prelims will be run on Thursday and the 200 trials will be on Friday. The finals for both events will be on Saturday.
Edwards, a freshman health and wellness major, will compete in the women's 200-meter dash trials on Thursday with hopes of advancing to Saturday's finals. She enters tied for 12th with a school record time of 24.95.
Barfield, a sophomore communication major, will compete in the long jump championship on Thursday. She set a new school standard with a leap of 5.73 meters last weekend and is ranked 11th in the nation.
Freshman Jones also eclipsed a Buffalo State record and will compete in the triple jump on Saturday. She enters the meet tied for 16th in the nation at 11.45 meters.
The top-8 in each event earn All-America status. Buffalo State had three All-Americans at the indoor meet: Hordge (T-4th in the 55-meter dash), Mario Hicks(Corning/Corning West) (2nd in the 55-meter hurdles), and Jenelle Orosz (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) (6th in the high jump).
