Fredonia and Potsdam Earn Victories in 2003 SUNYAC Challenge

Buffalo, NY—The 2003 SUNYAC Challenge opened up this evening with Fredonia and Potsdam earning opening day victories.

Fredonia (1-0) opened the tournament with a 5-3 victory over Cortland (0-1). The Blue Devils jumped out to a two-goal lead on goals from sophomore Florian Roth (Nuernberg, Germany) and junior Chris Wells (Plattsburgh). Cortland defensemen Buddy Anderson (Washington Township, NJ) would cut the Blue Devil lead to one with an unassisted goal coming at 9:33 in the second period. Fredonia would put the game out of reach with two goals in the second, one by Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, MO) and a shorthander from Eric Hlavaty (Hamburg). The Blue Devils would add one more in the third off a shot from freshman Kraig Kuzma (Muskegon, MI). Cortland would try to rally, scoring two goals in the third period. Jason Wilson (Johnston, RI) scored for the Red Dragons with 7:31 left in the game, and David Ambuhl (Clifton Park) added a power play goal with just under five minutes to play. Fredonia goaltenders Rob Stanley (New York) and David Beckles (Stamford, CT) combined for 31 stops. Freshman goaltender Shawn Gray (Slingerlands) made 27 saves for the Red Dragons.

In the night’s second game, Potsdam (1-0) came from behind to beat Buffalo State (0-1) 4-3. Bears forward Ryan Mattison (West Chester, PA) put his team up by one with a shot that beat Bengal goalie Adam Horvath (Coplay, PA). The Bengals would come clawing back and grab a two goal lead in the second with goals from Morgan McElman (Bayside, NB) and Mike DeMarco (Niagara Falls). Potsdam scored three consecutive goals in the third frame, including the game-winner from freshman Myles Palliser (Lake Cowichan, BC). Chris Lee (MacTier, ONT) and Greg Lee (Almonte ONT) tallied the other goals for the Bears. Sophomore Brian Janke (Anchorage, AK) scored the Bengal’s final goal with 42 seconds left in the game. Buffalo State pulled Horvath after a timeout but the Bengals fell short. Vince Cuccaro (Ottawa, ONT) played solid in net for the Bears registering 29 saves. Horvath had 33 saves in the loss.
