Fredonia Wins 10th Annual Buffalo State All-Sport Invitational

BUFFALO, NY—Fredonia skated to a victory today at Buffalo State Ice Arena to claim the 10th Annual All-Sport Invitational. Hobart also earned a victory in the tournament’s final game.

Fredonia (3-0-1) needed just 10 seconds to get on the score sheet in today’s first game as it rolled over Johnson & Wales (0-2-0), 13-3. Jim Gilbride led the Blue Devils attack with five goals. Matt Zemen added two goals and two assists, Erik Hlavaty scored a goal and had three assists, and Tom Briggs added a pair of goals for Fredonia. In addition, Joe Muli and Kraig Kuzma each scored a goal and two assists, and Mike Jurilj had three assists. Alan Rigatti tallied a goal and two assist, Justin Timpano had a goal and an assist, and Tom Webster scored a goal for Johnson & Wales.

In the final game of the tournament, Hobart (1-1) defeated host Buffalo State (1-3) by a 6-4 margin. The Statesmen jumped out to a two-goal first period lead on goals from Craig Levey (Mississauga, ONT), and Conor Bradley (West Hartford, CT). Buffalo State would go down 4-0 early in the second period before cutting the lead to two goals on a pair of Mike Zalewski (Grand Rapids, MI) scores. Forward Morgan McElman (Bayside, NB), who had a four-point night, scored a goal in the opening minutes of the final frame to give the Bengals hope. Sophomore Colby McVey (Chicago, IL) would score the eventual game-winner for the Statesmen with under ten minutes to play in regulation. Sean Castagna (San Jose, CA) would add a late goal for the Bengals to climb within one with 1:23 to play on the clock. Hobart’s Brian Keane (Sherborne, MA) scored in the final minute to finish the game’s scoring at 6-4. Buffalo State took home the runner-up trophy by outscoring Hobart 5-4 in tournament points.
