“New data on biology of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) case studies from Belarus”

The zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) is a Ponto-Caspian invasive mollusc, whose wide spread and proliferation in the waterbodies of Europe and North America resulted in significant ecological changes and caused major economic damage. Numerous studies have been conducted on both continents to reveal the peculiarities of biology and ecology of the zebra mussel. However, there are still many gaps in our knowledge about this pest species. In his presentation, Dr. Mastitsky will talk about two aspects of D. polymorpha biology that have gained little attention of researchers so far. On the example of studies conducted in the Republic of Belarus, he will discuss the parasitological consequences of the zebra mussel spread, as well as the role that the shells of Dreissena play as a substrate for periphyton.
