Gregory Porter Performs: February 22

Jazz and soul vocalist Gregory Porter comes to Buffalo State for an exclusive show as part of the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall's Great Performers Series, Sunday, February 22, at 8:00 p.m.

At the start of 2010, the buzz about the Los Angeles-born, Brooklyn-based vocalist was a strong, steady murmur, fueled by a growing crowd of fans. When Wynton Marsalis selected the then-unknown singer to perform a residency with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, people took notice.

Now, just a few years later, NPR Music has hailed him as “the next great male jazz singer.” A disarmingly sincere performer with a groove that never quits, Porter is that rare jazz vocalist with true star power, combining the big heart of a gospel shouter with the honeyed tone of a crooner. His album Liquid Spirit, which has gospel, blues, and R&B influences, was recently awarded the 2014 Grammy Award for “Best Vocal Jazz Album.”

Tickets are $15 student rush (valid student ID required, one per person, available one hour prior to showtime at the Rockwell Hall box office); $37 for faculty and staff; $37 for seniors; and $40-$45 general admission and available by phone at (716) 878-3005, online, and at the Rockwell Hall box office.
