Buffalo State’s $27-million renovation of Houston Gym is featured in the June 2015 issue of Athletic Business magazine, a national trade publication for athletics, recreation, and fitness administrators.
"The newly refurbished LEED Silver Houston Gymnasium has thoroughly modernized its campus sports, creating optimal facilities for the student-athlete and a new campus recreation center for all," notes the profile, found on pages 62 and 63 of the magazine’s 28th annual Architectural Showcase.
The redesigned Houston Gym features an upgraded Kissinger Pool and Houston Gymnasium; three refinished racquetball courts; bright and easy wayfinding throughout the building; and a showcase wall with two large video displays greeting visitors at the top of the main staircase.
The first floor is used primarily by student-athletes and athletics personnel and features designated year-round locker rooms for all Bengals’ outdoor sports teams and the swimming and diving team. The first floor also accommodates the state-of-the-art Paul A. Bacon Training and Rehabilitation Room, staff office space, and an expanded varsity weight room.
The second floor houses the main athletics offices, a new state-of-the-art Fitness Center for campus use, the Carolyn Lehr Student-Athlete Academic Center, a multipurpose studio, a spinning room, lounge spaces, classrooms, and offices as well as the Health and Wellness Department.
