The SUNY Buffalo State community will usher in a new academic year and welcome the Class of 2018 during the First-Year Convocation, Wednesday, August 20, at 9:00 a.m. in the Sports Arena. All members of the Buffalo State community are encouraged to attend.

Convocation, from the Latin words meaning “to call together,” has been used to describe a ceremonial assembly of members of a college since the fifteenth century. At Buffalo State, the annual event provides first-year students with the opportunity to hear from administrators as well as to meet fellow classmates and faculty.

President Katherine Conway-Turner, Provost Dennis Ponton, and University College Dean Scott Johnson will welcome new students—and their parents—to the beginning of their college journey. Dean of Students Charles Kenyon and United Students Government President Ashleigh-Ann Sutherland will also address the audience.

"First-Year Convocation will be exceptional as we welcome one of the largest classes of first-year students in recent history to Buffalo State," said Johnson. "It’s important that students and their families see that we value those who have chosen to be a part of our community. They will learn more about who we are and what’s possible as a student Buffalo State."

Additionally, deans of each of the college’s six schools will give an overview of their areas and what students can expect at Buffalo State. A slideshow and overview of First-Year Orientation will also provide audience members with an idea of the campus holds for them.

This fall, more than 1,700 first-time students are enrolled at Buffalo State.
