Law Enforcement Job Fair to Highlight Criminal Justice Careers

The 2007 Law Enforcement Consortium, a free job fair for Buffalo State College students and the Western New York community, will bring together 20 different local, statewide and national law enforcement agencies who are actively recruiting new employees.

Sponsored by Buffalo State’s Criminal Justice Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma, the event will take place on Monday, Sept. 10, from 6-9 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge at the Campbell Student Union.

According to event organizers, the role of law enforcement has evolved since 9/11, creating more job openings than ever before. “The goal of the consortium is to show Buffalo State students and members of the community that law enforcement is far broader than it used to be,” said George Kaufmann, president of Buffalo State’s Alpha Phi Sigma chapter. “There has never been a better time than right now to look at a career in this field.”

Confirmed national law enforcement agencies include the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).

Kaufmann added that while the national emphasis on Homeland Security has increased the number of available positions, factors such as an aging workforce, especially in Western New York, have also led to the higher demand for law enforcement professionals.

“Many agencies both nationally and in Western New York will be seeing a large number of retirements in the next five years,” Kaufmann said. “Not only will those retirements create more openings, but it will give new employees in these agencies a chance to move quickly up the ladder toward higher paying positions.”

Local agencies scheduled to attend include the New York State Police, New York Department of Corrections, New York State Division of Parole, as well as police departments from Cheektowaga, Amherst and the Town of Niagara. Other confirmed agencies include the Buffalo State College University Police, Norfolk Southern Railroad Police Department, Erie County District Attorney’s Office, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Police, New York State Racing and Wagering Board and the New York State Liquor Authority.

A number of the confirmed agencies will also be accepting exam applications on site during the event.
