Manhattanville Claims Men’s Hockey SUNYAC Challenge; Buffalo State Downs Cortland
BUFFALO, NY – Manhattanville defeated Fredonia in a shootout to claim the SUNYAC Challenge tonight at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. In the other game, Buffalo State defeated Cortland, 4-1.
Manhattanville (1-0-1) rallied to play Fredonia (1-0-1) to a 2-2 tie in today’s first game. Jason Murfitt (Ottawa, ON) had a goal and an assist to lead Manhattanville. Dillon Henningson (Edmonton, AB) also scored, while Chris Trafford (Kinburn, ON) and Mickey Lang (Hillsdale, NJ) each chipped in an assist. Andrew Hess (Bowling Green, ON) and Steve Albert (Port Huron, MI) each scored for Fredonia. James Muscatello (Baldwinsville, NY), Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, OH) and Matt McKeown (Niagara Falls, ON) each had one assist. Manhattanville’s Zeke Hume (Osoyoos, BC) had the lone goal in the shootout which used to determine a winner for tournament purposes only.
In the nightcap, Buffalo State (1-1) fell behind 1-0 early in the second period, but then scored four straight goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Cortland (0-2). Justin Porpora (Hauppauge, NY) opened the scoring for the Red Dragons, but the Bengals responded just 41 second later and cruised to the victory from there. Jeff Mok (Richmond Hill, ON) led the Bengals with a goal and two assists. Nick Petriello (St. Catharines) had a goal and an assist, and Kerry Barchan (Oakville, ON) and Travis Whitehead (Cambridge, ON) also scored. Travis Moore (Simcoe, ON) made 18 saves for the win.
